I have always found that 'autonomy' comes down to trust from senior leaders to enable their teams to actually get on and do things. If they don't, stuff generally doesn't get done and then it becomes a self-fulfilling cycle. Trust takes time, but one needs to allow our teams to have autonomy to enable them to build the trust and learn to deliver. Plus we are not always right (a sobering thought!), but we have great people who can be given an opportunity to thrive and support (otherwise, why have we employed them in the first place?).

I am a huge proponent of simplifying processes. Pulling strategies and strategic plans down from a very high level into an operational and tactical plan is what helps teams with delegation of tasks, while ensuring the overall strategy is implemented successfully. I have seen situations where team members moved out to implement a strategy and it was if someone said ready, set, go and people were running in different directions, literally tripping over each other. Delegation of task is important as long as folks are crystal clear on strategy outcomes.

How many times have we become overwhelmed by a strategic plan, which looks great on paper, and something which everyone fully understood whilst we were at the drawing board, but now seems somewhat nebulous?! Teams and individuals want to know how they fit in, what's important to them and how they can contribute. Simple as that. We need to ensure we can communicate the strategy in a way that is meaningful and relevant to each and every part of our team without ambiguity. Potentially an art and not a science, but essential. Process is key. RACI is important; but communication is integral.

Regular check-in with the team is essential to ensuring that you as leader are providing your the support they need to execute both strategy and their delegated tasks: to reassess if the right team members are still the right individuals to perform delegated tasks: to make adjustments to tasks and team members, and even more important to assist with navigating team dynamics of forming, storming, norming and performing.

This marks the crucial stage of delegation. Consistent check-ins reduce the chances of straying from the objective and bolster team confidence. As trust and skills develop, these check-ins can evolve into sporadic ones and eventually fade away.
