What do you do if salary expectations become a sensitive topic in an accounting job interview?

It's really important to do your research before answering what is your expected salary , through: 1- Asking people with similar positions and companies you are applying for. 2- Referring to some of those specialized websites that show the average salary for certain jobs in specific countries. 3- By knowing your worth and level of salary that would satisfy your current obligations

In my experience, applicant to the job must not initiate salary related discussion. However, in case the matter is not touched and the interview is over culminating in applicant receiving a nod. Then it is safe to bring forth research.

While negotiating salary, consider other perks the new employer offers and the workplace environment. Candidates often lose their chances by focusing too much on salary.

1- Before the interview, research typical salary ranges for accounting positions in your area, taking into account factors like experience, education, and certifications. 2- Instead of solely discussing salary, emphasize the value you bring to the role. 3- If possible, try to delay discussing salary until you have a better understanding of the job requirements and the company's expectations. 3- If asked directly about salary expectations, consider providing a range based on your research. 4- Make sure the range is reasonable and reflects your level of experience and qualifications. 5- Show that you're flexible and willing to negotiate by emphasizing other factors that are important to you.

There are a lot of market survey's available through Robert Half and other recruitment firms to help you with your research. Geographic cost of living, experience, degrees and certifications all play a role in valuation. I've also found accomplishments matter. Access your attributes and then benchmark you against the survey ranges for the position you've applied for.

It is important to keep in mind that salary negotiations are never easy, but with a bit of flexibility and effort, they can be highly beneficial for both sides. It is important to stay calm and respectful during the negotiation process. Candidats for job should be prepared to explain how their skills and experience match the job requirements.

Still don't get nailed down with regards to what you're making now or about percentages over what you've currently making. The best way to negotiate a salary you want is to quantify the value you are (or will be) bringing to the company. If you don’t work in a direct revenue generating position, think about the ways you increase the companies bottom line. How many man hours are you saving with your efforts? How are you cutting costs? How much time are you saving those in direct revenue generating positions? If you quantify the savings (or additional revenue) you are responsible for, it will be a lot harder for them to say no.

This shows that you are solution-oriented and willing to work collaboratively to meet both parties' needs.

I would say that the best option would be to propose a performance bonus or extra vacation days to show your flexibility and value as a problem-solver. This showcases your willingness to find a win-win and positions you as a proactive employee.

As per my experience maintain a calm and positive demeanor, emphasizing the value you bring to the role while referencing researched market rates for similar positions. Be open to negotiation, redirecting the conversation to focus on qualifications and responsibilities if necessary, and follow up professionally to express continued interest in the position.

After the interview, send a thank-you note that reiterates your interest in the position and your openness to further discussions. This can help keep the lines of communication open and reinforces your professional demeanor.

Gonna share a very unpopular opinion here: Never ever share a figure or sum of money as salary in front of interviewer, I have experienced it and it creates bad impact. (Well, it may depends!) If interviewer is asking what amount you expect from us, just say that you received this much salary from last employer and you don't know the norms and what this company pays, you read the job description and considered it as a good opportunity to grow and learn, you hope that company won't disappoint you in salary terms, being a fast learner and hard working employee.

There was a recent law change that says prospective employers cannot ask what you are making and that they must post the range for the position. This means that on their application you shouldn't list what you are making in your current position and should take advantage of the posted range.
