What do you do if risk management is not integrated into all levels of your organization?

A siloed approach to risk management, where it's confined to a specific department, can leave your organization vulnerable. Integrating risk management can enhance decision-making, reduce costs, and improve organizational resilience. It requires leadership buy-in, communication campaigns, employee training, cross-functional teams, and empowered risk management champions. A comprehensive risk management framework should align with the organization's strategy and objectives. Performance measurement should be integrated into evaluation processes, and clear reporting channels should be established for risk identification and escalation.

I would first conduct a risk assessment test to gather intelligence (with actionable steps) on how to implement the solutions. If I am working in a team, I will feed this to my supervisor. If I am leading a team on the other hand, I will ensure that the stakeholders understand what needs to be done and how to get it done.

Building continuous risk programs to monitor an organisations risk can be tedious and funnily enough risky. If a company is to successfully mitigate important risk factors that attack bottom lines, like default, liquidity, reputational risk, etc, top tier management must first have mature attitudes to the fact that risks occur. If not, they must be educated by risk and compliance teams. To so educate, on risk mitigation integration, risk experts must create reports to that are able to reach or be showcased, at the Board level. It is difficult to perceive that a Board would not be moved to action, if shown a dire risk report that is affecting bottom lines, when it's literally a Boards mandate to ensure bottom lines remains lucrative.

Conduct a comprehensive assessment to identify areas where risk management is lacking or not fully integrated into the organization's processes, systems, and culture. Evaluate existing policies, procedures, and practices to pinpoint gaps and areas for improvement in risk identification, assessment, and mitigation.

I strongly believe in 'Give a 'person a fish and you feed him/her for a day. Teach a person to fish and you feed him/her for a lifetime'. In my experience, a lot of times employees (at all levels of business) shy away from risk management due to the unknown and ambiguity of the subject. I have found that tailored/customised programs to continually educate on risk management is essential if you want to have a build and improve on strong risk maturity.

Provide targeted training and development programs to equip staff at all levels with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to effectively identify, assess, and manage risks within their respective roles and responsibilities. Offer specialized training sessions, workshops, and resources tailored to different departments and functions to promote a culture of risk awareness and competence.

Deploy appropriate risk management tools, technologies, and systems to streamline processes, facilitate data collection and analysis, and enable real-time monitoring and reporting of risks. Invest in robust risk management software platforms or solutions that align with the organization's needs and objectives, allowing for seamless integration into existing workflows and systems.

Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure the effectiveness of risk management integration efforts over time. Regularly monitor progress against established benchmarks, track adherence to risk management policies and procedures, and solicit feedback from stakeholders to identify areas of success and areas needing improvement.

Everyone is a risk owner in the organizational setting and Everyone is a risk manager. Risk being embedded in every level must be a culture. It is a part of the strategy going forward.
