What do you do if you receive negative feedback on your work?

Receiving negative feedback is a part of our career journeys. Take a deep breath and be proactive by asking a lot of clarifying questions using "I" statements. 1. Ask for specific examples including when it occurred. If the person can't pinpoint specifics, don't discount the feedback. Instead, give them permission to point it out immediately if it happens again so that you can walk through it together in a timely fashion. 2. If they provide examples that surprise you, keep listening and don't interrupt. Ask for time to process the information and set up a second meeting to provide some context and/or a thoughtful response. 3. Ask for recommendations for how to improve? Is it a class, a conference, a mentor or coach? Then develop a plan

Feedback is a gift - and sometimes it feels like trying to unwrap a cactus. It can poke and prod all of the spots where I'm still growing or feeling vulnerable. For me, I like to: 1. Check in with the body. What are the local weather conditions? Where's the storm brewing? Where's the temperature rising? 2. Check in with the mind. What's on the news? What's the story I'm telling myself? Does the reporting capture all sides, or just mine 3. Check in with reality. What's the uncomfortable truth I may be avoiding? What are the facts, apart from my thoughts and feeling? What else happening here beyond the exchange of feedback? Checking in helps attune my reaction to reality and find a path forward that honors my integrity and relationship.

Receiving negative feedback can be disheartening, but it's an opportunity for growth. First, I take a step back to process my emotions. Then, I objectively analyze the feedback to understand its validity and areas for improvement. I seek clarification if needed and ask for specific examples. Next, I formulate an action plan to address the issues raised, incorporating constructive criticism into my work. Finally, I remain open-minded, viewing criticism as a chance to enhance my skills and deliver better results in the future.

It will depend on who is giving you the negative feedback. If it's from a trusted peer or mentor, there will less of a sting when received. I think being able to look outside of ourselves and understand what's being highlighted as deficient can actually serve as a powerful motivator. I think to the words of wisdom from Dr. Stanley Jones on his recommendation for us to abdicate our thrones in our comfort kingdoms if we wish to grow as professionals. Without negative feedback, we'd never want to leave our kingdoms and may actually be holding ourselves back from reaching our true potential.

When faced with negative feedback, it's crucial to honestly reflect on it. Consider the source and seek clarification if needed. Use the feedback constructively by identifying areas for improvement and specific actions to take. Express gratitude to the giver for their input, showing a willingness to learn and grow. By embracing feedback openly and proactively addressing shortcomings, you can enhance your work and personal development.
