In the context of an interviewer asking questions of an applicant, and wanting to help understand the response enough to qualify the candidate for a follow-up interview, it is often helpful to create a rubric that helps the interviewer score the response based on your defined criteria, keywords, method of response, etc. Sometimes this doesn't work as the subject matter is too complex, and if that is the case, perhaps removing this question from the process is best anyway. Either save these questions for follow-up interviews or move them into a request for a work sample where the applicant delivers their work or response and the interviewer helps the decision-making team get the information from the applicant for vetting.

Analogies can be a powerful tool to help non-technical interviewers grasp complex technical ideas. By comparing a technical process to a common real-world scenario, you make the concept more relatable. Enabling the understanding of the non-tech interviewer with an analogy of a recent industry success helps them draw inferences & be more confident while having a conversation with the candidate. For eg:How a recent success in the e-commerce, fintech firm is actually a software company instead of a product company as they do not hold any inventory Vs a core product company manufacturing/reselling physical goods, Or how a microservices architecture can be derived from a monolithic application which helps enterprises become agile, scalable hence resulting in higher business revenue. This kind of guidance helps them to guide their train of thought and tie-up the loose ends they might have by learning more on the industry buzz words they hear.

When technical details are less relevant to the interviewer's understanding, focus on the benefits of the technology instead. Explain how the software improves efficiency, reduces costs, or mitigates risks in terms that resonate with business outcomes.
