When dealing with all the virtual complexity of IT, it is necessary to reduce complex ideas down to a simple form so they can easily interrelate with other complex ideas. All these verbal pictures can be helpful when talking to non-IT personnel and, if the context's remain simple, it can serve as a measure of a person's skill level to both non-IT and experienced IT professionals. Also, an interviewee has the opportunity to demonstrate their real-time skills directly to the interviewer, potentially showcasing abilities they may soon utilize in the near future. =)

If its a technical interview, I feel that layman's terms is going to backfire. If the interviewer is looking for an expert, They will have the understanding on the areas to be accessed. In such scenarios, explaining generic acronyms like DHCP is not going to give a good impression. The language to be used purely depends on who is sitting on the other side and their in-depth knowledge on the specific area. We can try to impress them with what we know. Sometimes, what we are saying may not be that familiar for them. In such scenarios, they will keep on moving with the next question. But if the interviewer comes back on something with more granular level questions, Then interviewer is strong and try to go to the maximum technical detailing.

I strongly feel that during the preparation, we should keep few real life scenarios and the best way to explain the context in few words. Interviewer should get a high level idea on the context , so that while explaining a real life incident - they can relate. Another point is how relatable such scenarios for the work environment which the interview is placing. If you are working for a healthcare company, the scenario which you are trying to explain specific on that segment may not be relevant on somewhere else. So choose the right scenario which can fit into the job role, which will be meaningful.
