What do you do if you need to select team members for a biotechnology project?

How you would define specific roles for parts of your team would first require a strong project definition. Without a firm understanding of all the specific ins and outs of the project, you will have difficulty assembling an effective team. Once you have gathered these critical details you can now define key roles and gather the right people with the appropriate skills and expertise.

A role is a set of behaviors, rights, obligations, beliefs, and norms that are expected or free and may change continuously. It can also be a character assigned or assumed, a part played by an actor or singer, or a function or part performed in a particular operation or process

In my experience, clearly defining the different roles needed for the project, such as researchers, lab technicians, data analysts, project managers, etc. Each role should have specific responsibilities and expectations

One thing I have found useful and also testimonials from colleagues is to evaluate the skills and expertise of potential team members to ensure they have the necessary qualifications and experience for their respective roles. Look for technical skills relevant to biotechnology, such as chemistry, molecular biology techniques, bioinformatics, experimental design, etc

Skill assessment is a way to evaluate an individual's ability to perform a specific skill or set of skills. It compares a person's actual performance to a specified standard, and determines if it meets or exceeds the requirements. Skills assessments can be used for hiring and employee development initiatives. For example, hiring managers may use skills assessments to narrow down the list of candidates to interview, or to decide between finalists.

When building your biotech team, assess each candidate's skills meticulously to ensure they bring incremental value necessary to meet KPIs (promised to investors). Rather than just filling roles "with bodies", select individuals whose expertise and drive will propel your objectives forward. I am not talking about experience on paper. Evaluate how each potential team member can contribute uniquely to the team’s success, focusing on how their specific skills align with your goals, how they problem solve, how they communicate ideas, if they are not afraid to speak up and offer ideas that are "off the charts." This selectiveness not only optimizes team performance but also aligns with delivering on the promises made to your investors.

Seek diversity" means to include or involve people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, and other perspectives. It can also mean to explore these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment.

Adding gamification during the team selection process is very helpful. These can be team-based problem-solving challenges or simulations of real-life project scenarios that reveal candidates' collaboration skills, decision-making abilities, and adaptability under pressure. They may also tell you how well team members will work together. Once a team is assembled, one can use peer evaluations where candidates assess each other's contributions and teamwork dynamics, which can offer valuable insights into the health of the team.

I like check one additional key thing in my teams. I always ask every team member if they want to play the role they have been assigned for and what is in it for them. You may need to dedicate extra time to the person to develop himself on some skills and capabilities, but if he is eager for it, I can guarantee you that he will return back the investment by far. When somebody really wants to be part of it, and he is fully committed because you trust and support him, the probability to increase the success of the projects grows exponentially. We tend to assign people for roles they do not want to play because we consider it is a better role for them, but we need to be cautious as this might turn into a frustrated team member...
