What do you do if you need to maximize storage in tight spaces?

In my laundry room, I've been working on maximizing every inch of space to ensure efficiency and convenience. One of the strategies I'm implementing is installing cabinets that go all the way up to the ceiling. However, I've thoughtfully incorporated a pull-down system for the higher shelves, so I can easily access items stored up high without needing a step stool.

When space is tight, utilize vertical storage solutions like floating shelves, tall bookcases, or wall-mounted cabinets. This saves floor space and creates a larger room illusion. Use the back of doors for hanging storage or install a pegboard for tools. Maximize vertical real estate for a more organized space.

Furniture with built-in storage compartments is a must in small spaces. Beds with drawers underneath, ottomans with lids, or coffee tables with hidden shelves serve their primary function while providing storage. This strategy keeps spaces uncluttered and ensures every piece of furniture works harder.

In our experience we have maximised use of space by building hidden compartments along the full length of walls, door overheads, under seating compartments and many more. Using creative skills these hidden compartments become quite the topic of conversations with proud house owners who love to keep their homes neat!

Modular storage systems are highly versatile and can adapt to any space, no matter how awkward. They allow for customization, adding or removing components as needed. Choose units that stack or connect to create a solution that grows with you. This adaptability is especially useful in tight quarters.

Items such as stow away beds/murphy beds, storage ottomans, convertible coffee tables, modular shelving units, storage benches and many more can transform a space instantly. It can multiply the usage of this space to be able to serve to different activities according to the users/homeowners needs without having to add an extra room or extended space. In essence, the space is given a continuous change of atmosphere leading to an exciting and dynamic environment.

My husband often jokes that he is going to end up in a tote, but that the reality is getting rid of superfluous items and then having a space for those items you choose to keep is everything! If you might use it it someday, you are probably more likely to not use it and donate it. Everything takes time and maintenance from your body to what you design. Take a good look at each item and ask yourself if you want to maintain it. If not, out it goes!

Using hooks or rails behind your laundry room door to maximize space and keep things organized. Hooks: Great for single items like ironing boards, spray bottles, or laundry bags. Consider hooks with rounded edges for less snagging. Rails: Offer a more streamlined look and can hold multiple items or a small drying rack. Rails with shorter prongs work well for spray bottles.

Yes declutter... Very very important.. Why I need it When I need it? How many times will I need it? As an designer many times I have asked my clients this question!! Sometimes they seem it's weird that I ask them but very soon they realise why had done and that too at times why with one particular item!!! Not only helps me design a space for it but also makes my client realize how much one can go deep in micro planning of spaces....

Love this. My husband is always about getting rid of things that I feel we could use "one day". But there are things that I've kept that I've had to use and glad I had around when doing a project or two.

Allow yourself to indulge in being creative with space solution. Approach the space without any preconceived ideas of how the space should look like in normal standard planning and design. For example, in a bedroom where beds were often set against the wall, we can place it at the center of the room instead with the wardrobe cabinetry acting as its bedhead. The beds can be built with under compartments to house linen and extra bedding storage. Another example is to create desk against the wall with hidden a compartment within to be able to open up with a mirror to serve as a vanity desk when needed. The list is endless! So enjoy the process of exploring and creating exciting spaces to live and work in.
