I believe the first and foremost thing to do before jumping into the data gathering or any other steps is to have a solid understanding of your own (company's) needs and requirements and list them out in a prioritized fashion. By doing this exercise you're able to figure out what need(s) are unmet by current suppliers or what to look for in any new supplier. Doing this right will make data gathering and other steps easier and it would also enable you to compare and benchmark different suppliers based on what matters most to you and your company. This will also help you in qualifying and shortlisting new suppliers and prevent any wastage of time and effort further down the road.
