What do you need to know before asking for a promotion?

What is your value? Know your own contributions. You must be able to articulate the value you bring to the organization. Do you meet or exceed expectations for your current role? If you exceed the requirements for your position then you may be a candidate for promotion. Can you monetize the value you bring? If you can tie revenue gained or cost savings to your contributions you demonstrate business acumen that leads to promotion opportunities.

. How have you contributed to the company's goals, solved problems, or improved processes? How have you demonstrated leadership, initiative, or creativity? How have you exceeded expectations, taken on extra responsibilities, or learned new skills?

An experienced senior once quoted to me: "Evaluate & rectify your performance before letting others to do that for you". Keep a record of all your achievements with proper evidences- assess the value that it adds to your business and make sure to highlight it at the right time!

Keep an honest record of what you do for the company. Prepare a list of examples that demonstrate your work ethic, experience, and skillset. This way you can state a strong case and be prepared to answer any challenging questions. The majority of people want the raise but aren't prepared to explain why, which discredits them in the eyes of management.

As someone preparing for a managerial position, you must also know about the industry. Are you keeping up with the competition in your field? Know the trends and happenings - how does this affect you and demonstrate your value to the organization as someone they need to keep?

Why should you get a raise if you don't know why you deserve it other than financial compensation? In order to grow in your career, you need to know beyond the money what your career means to you

"You are as good as your last quarter". To get a raise, there is no better time than asking it when you crushed your numbers. You want to highlight your achievements and how it impacted the business strategy overall (the company) and how it improved your skills (You).

Scheduling a meeting is essential. No one wants to be ambushed or bullied. Instead, find the right time for the discussion and build a positive dialogue so the conversation can be open for both parties.

Come prepared! Prepare talking points and focus on how your input provided exceptional. Depending on your role, your outputs may be: - Optimizing profits for the company - Boosted employee morale - Improved diversity and inclusion - Generated new business In all cases, quantify whenever possible.

Prepare your case and don't waste the managers' time. If you know why they wouldn't give you a raise, you can address any objections to turn the conversation around in your favor.

Trust your gut! If the offer falls below your expectation, take a step back, reflect and look at it a few moments later. After 6 months at a company, I was offered a promotion and a 2,000$ raise. I was pretty happy about both the promotion and the pay increase, but, my intuition advised against signing the new contract yet. So I did not decline or accept; instead I asked my supervisor and HR if "there was any flexibility about the new salary" and made cases for my increase. 72 hours, they came back with a $4,000 increase instead of $2,000. I was happy about it and signed the new contract. Moral of the story: if the offer does not feel like the best option, take a step back and trust your gut.
