For example if object detection using lidar is critical to the project then using a dense but narrow fov lidar will be much more useful than using a 360 degree but sparse one. As they say in photography better composition of the picture in the first place can save hours of photoshop time

All the teams, should be on boarded while planning to minimise the future bottlenecks. ROS is a good platform to use for the integration but it comes with its own benifits and drawbacks. Through research should be done before choosing the right framework and communication protocol for integration.

A question that's often not asked is whether we choose to outsource or develop in house, are we going to have the right organisational structures and resources in the future to support the technology? What capability gaps will we have as an organisation? How do we fill these in? Grow or partner?

Where there are gaps, either provide training to upskill your team or consider bringing in specialists with the needed expertise. Robotics skills are hard and can't be learned overnight. Developing capability often boils down to recruitment, and making good use of dorman in-house talent. This is more of an issue when outsourcing a solution that's core to the business to accelerate time to market, but we now need to build the know-how to maintain and onshore. If outsourcing, make sure the contract includes knowledge transfer as part of the deliverable, and be prepared to pay for this as cheap knowledge transfer in an afternoon probably won't do.
