Here is one thumb rule I have been following and has been working great for me. I have replaced vanilla CNN architectures in my pipelines with Visual Transformers. You can find easy implementations of it almost everywhere. In simple words, the way a Visual Transformer just divides an image into multiple patches. And then computes cross attention between the different patches. In other words, it tries to see how one part of the image might relate to another, much in the same way as in a Sentence Transformer, we calculate attention scores between each token to another. This helps our model in forming a deeper understanding of the image and it learns a deeper representation than it would otherwise have. A must try :)
