While walking them through your resume or answering the “tell me about yourself question”, highlight a success at that job and then say, “Unfortunately that job ended with a layoff. It’s too bad, I might still be there if they hadn’t hit rough times.” Remember layoffs are not about you. They are about bad economies or bad management decisions. Don’t make it more than it needs to be. It’s a rare person who gets through a 40+ year career without a layoff.
