What do you do if you lack the key skills to drive innovation in CSR roles?

CSR is good for business and Community. As is IDE (Inclusion Diversity Equality) A hybrid mechanism of social investment needs to be built into all business models. This is tax efficient, creates reinvestment into local communities who reflect your marketplace. CSR should never be a marketing initiative.

Skill mapping across the organization is the key. Too many organizations approach their CSR programs with the skill sets confined with their CSR or Citizenship teams. While they are there to liaise with partners and administer the programs, the real capability necessary to add innovation value often exists in specialist functions (engineering, manufacturing, R&D). Building an internal coalition that identifies innovation opportunities for CSR partnerships cannot only unlock hidden value in the organization, it can deliver true progress for the target community that delivers a step change in addressing their challenges.

Books and theory will never compete with on the ground experience. Connect with social enterprises, community organisations and reputable leaders in the space.

I am a big believer in starting with a short course on Udemy or Coursera. Then read up on Reddit or Medium. YouTube videos can be most insightful. Some can be done while running on a treadmill. All you need is dedication.

In order to understand what skills you lack, look up influential people within the CSR space on LinkedIn that are one or two levels above you in their career. What competencies are skills do they have that you lack? Job descriptions are also a great resource to understand your skills gaps. Again, look at job descriptions for roles that are a bit higher than your current experience. Once you have a list of key skills, then look on Coursera, Google, YouTube or Udemy to learn your missing skills.

Monitoring & Evaluation of Accountability to Affected People (AAP) in humanitarian contexts can help us understand Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). By tracking AAP, we can see the importance of Data-Driven Decisions (Using feedback to shape more effective and ethical interventions), Meaningful Community Engagement (Ensuring diverse voices are heard and drive decisions), and Transparency (open and transparent process build trust and promote continuous improvement).

I think benchmarking can fix the weaknesses we have in the innovation sector. Attending various events and hearing the opinions of experts and successful experiences of other organizations can help us on the way to achieving sustainability in corporates. So my suggestion is to increase the talent and abilities through communication with experts and using the good practices of others.

I find it challenging to pinpoint where this fits exactly, but I believe a fundamental weakness of the CSR term lies in its focus on 'corporation'. The real question should be: to what or whom are we being socially responsible? It’s crucial to explore the contexts and the communities we work with. Perhaps a more fitting term would be Contextual Social Responsibility?
