As a game designer what a lot of companies will ask you to show in an interview is the ability to convey a minimum viable product to a team. Knowledge of game engines and coding is always appreciated but the first and foremost thing for a game designer is to be able to communicate one's idea in any medium that is asked of you. In my experience, the best way to check this is to teach your friends something. If you can explain concepts to them you can have a good start as a game designer.

The way I like to do about it ideally if given a chance to talk to a person who makes games at a company is to play their games or watch someone play it. When you are done with the game do write a review and reflect upon the game. People who have industry experience can understand the importance of being able to reflect on game design choices and make changes accordingly. It is appreciated always if you can make a mod of their or similar games.

Especially if you are working in a smaller team the ability to be able to pick up portfolios and help the team through times when extra manpower is required is extremely valuable. It not only aids the project but helps with the team culture as well, be sure to make sure that you don't burn yourself out, however :).
