I like to think of a negotiation as a way that my future employer and I have a conversation about what matters to each of us. My future manager may need to prioritize financials and so cannot increase a salary offer, but to me, my priority may be time away to spend with family, so I may be ok taking a lower salary as long as the vacation time is high enough. By talking about what matters to each of us, we begin learning about what matters to each other and establish a relationship built on values and collaboration. This mindset can help make your first day at a new job even better too as you and your new manager already have an idea of what matters to the other.

Why not reach out to someone in the field working for the same or a different company and ask them if they think the offer is fair? I have done this a couple times, a cold outreach to ask for a valuable perspective and each time it was extremely helpful.
