If an employee fails, I'd first ensure they know it's a learning opportunity, not a setback. I'd sit down with them to understand what went wrong and identify any support they need—be it training, resources, or guidance. Together, we'd set clear, achievable goals for improvement, with regular check-ins to track progress and adjust as necessary. It's about fostering a supportive environment that encourages growth and resilience, showing them failure is just a step towards success.

Employees can fail in different ways. If it is technical, it’s a good thing, as the whole team and the employee themselves learn a particular way not to do a particular job. If they fail as a team member, then understanding how they can be more effective in the team and telling them that helps by showing them what is expected (ideally with some live examples) If they fail as a company’s employee entirely, then assigning them critical training is necessary.

When an employee fail then look how you have supported them and also how the business has done so. did they get the right training, support and onboarding required to carry out the task. we can always point blame at the individual with out looking at ourselves or the business

I have had staff disclose (during performance evaluations) that they had a learning or visual disability they didn't want to share or thought they could work through it on their own. The quality of the communication on the outcome of an employee's lack of adequate or relevant contribution in an organisation matters to all stakeholders. Yes, the bottom line of running a business is profit, but the people are the engine room and they must be appropriately cared for. The feedback must be built on transparent parameters, an unbiased perspective, and layered with compassion. In my experience, business owners should not be the ones giving this feedback because they can become quite emotional and brash. That's why, no matter the phase of growth of a business, mature minds must manage the human capital.

While I failed personally in different stages and roles in my career, I tried to find a like-minded mentor who has gone through similar stages and succeeded. So, when an employee fails, the best way is to connect the employee with a mentor who has led the same or similar role earlier. The mentor can certainly make that employee's life easier and smooth!

Labelling it as a failure is one way of looking at it. In a Growth Mindset setting, this could potentially be called “not successful yet”. A “not yet” approach provides a sense of assurance and direction. It tends to reward the effort and fosters a behaviour of trying to improve on a continuous basis.

Reassess - were you trying to fire the emp anyway, remove or eliminate the person, or role, downsizing, right sizing? 3, Damage control: you the boss, your team/s the failed emp are all now damaged by that failure - mentally, physically - this will manifest as ill health, broken relationships - can you fix all these and prevent further damage? 4.
