What do you do if an architect's technical expertise is in question?

In case of any doubts, feel free to talk directly with the architect or search for other solutions or more training that will bridge the gap. If that situation arises where there is a need for it, think about different ways of executing the project.

The same in life I guess, communicate your ideas and knowledge always in the most precise, simple and honest way. There are lots of ways of comunication, words, drawings, projects, etc. Still, If the client doesn't believe or trust you, maybe he shouldn't be your client. You only need his trust to make things happen. Everything else is irrelevant, in my opinion. The relationship between architect and cliente is sacred, and must be the valued as the most importante thing.

When someone questions you about your credentials, trying to find who asked the question is frankly quite a poor, defensive step. Demonstrating technical prowess is not really based on who asked the question. As a professional; one has to assume that such credibility checks would anyway be done sometime or the other. That is part of the deal of being a professional. An architect needs to be ready with published, verifiable works beforehand. I don't mean just projects done, but also other works are respected by one's own peers -- such as papers published in conferences/journals. So when someone questions, put all your published work forward to the questioner in a dignified manner.

Cuando un cliente busca un arquitecto pasa un proceso de selección. El cliente evalúa diferentes aspectos tanto del trabajo como de la persona. De la misma manera debemos evaluar a nuestros clientes, y esto debe suceder incluso antes de la primera reunión. Yo lo tomo como parte de mis estudios preliminares: conocer más sobre este cliente potencial. A veces estas búsquedas pueden arrojar banderas rojas sobre si es un bot, otro despacho etc.. Alguien que no quiere una reunión cara a cara para mí es un no.

One must understand the context in which questions of credibility come into an architects life: The "architects intuition" is present NOT just among architects -- all humans; innately, have some serious observations and intuitions about the built environment. How the built environment should be handled and why it should be handled all lead to firm opinions in the minds of many. Not only architects. So be gentle with the questioner -- they possibly have good reasons for their questions. It is important to walk through the questions in a step-by-step fashion without much jargon. Provide references and respect that the other may not just be looking for skills but also deep knowledge. There is a difference between "skills" and "knowledge"

Comunicar lo que se pretende llevar a satisfacer las necesidades de un cliente, sino se explica con claridad el "alcance" de la propuesta, lo que el cliente va a esperar recibir.... creerá que se le esta cobrando en exceso por algo que ellos creen que pueden solucionar con un arquitecto de confianza, o un familiar, etc. Se le presenta una propuesta con las siguientes características, alcances, tiempo de entrega, etc.

one of the best communication skills is listening. most folks will tell you what they are going to do if you wait and listen- it's usually not about you professionally , but about them. They came to you because of your reputation, not your good looks (LOL)

I am always learning and improving and the folks who are not will simply be left behind. Which is not to say that the old time designers are bad or even out of date, but their language is different.

Nothing is perfect in this world. Everything has flaws. If someone is questioning your design, it might be possible that he has some past experience with that design. It's the opportunity for you to learn from their experience, what problem they faced, what approach they took. Apply that learning and see how can you improve your architecture.

Learn and improve is also about reflecting, or taking a step back to understand why the technical expertise is being questioned. First and foremost is the critique valid? This requires a confirmation, or verification if statements made are indeed correct or if any mistake was made, or even if there was a misinterpretation of facts. If the conclusion is the all statements (or decisions etc) made were appropriate then you need to ask yourself why are others questioning your validity. Is it the way you are communicating, your posture and overall self-confidence, or other. In any case there is always room for improvement if we are willing to learn from our experiences and find news ways or solutions to old problems.

A veces saturamos a los clientes con demasiados proyectos, hay que analizar el perfil del cliente?y crear un book breve más enfocado en su proyecto. En mi experiencia el trato personalizado es lo que cierra los tratos, no un portafolio. Es mejor trabajar en tus aptitudes de negociación y tu trato humano. Esto es lo que nos diferencia del mundo digital.

Because we're usually generalists who lead the team of consultants and contractors in design projects, architects sometimes have the misconception that we need to be technical experts in all related fields. While it's important to define the scope of architecture, and become technically-skilled in your area of expertise, you shouldn't be expected to be proficient in related services, such as structural design or HVAC. There are other reliable expert consultants on board to provide that knowledge, and architects coordinate with them to realize the design in the most optimized way. It is the architect's vision and design expertise that guides the project. Knowing this, you can unapologetically direct technical queries to the right experts.

The question is not very clear. Is the architect doubting himself/herself or other teams are not confident about the capabilities of the architect? In the first case, the architect needs to have all the supporting facts handy, be confident and prove his/her point. In the latter case, depending upon the other capabilities of the architect, needs of the company etc. proper training can be considered.

In my personal experience all these years of enjoying my design as a passion, we are put under questionable circumstances by many like our colleague, supervisors, clients, other service providers. With all that happening around we need to have our mind set on our principles and understand that our design always speaks for us. We need to focus on our design approach in satisfying the requirements with all true consciousness. Build confidence in our knowledge, understanding and techniques from scratch to finish. Learning always helps, explore all possibilities by innovation.Experiment new technology and emerging trends. Watch for problem solving designs. It is our credit and a true experienced architect will always compliment good designs.
