Through my experiences as a business owner and in my previous positions, I have sent the value in top-down estimation. It is important to know the goal for the project to complete the top-down estimation. Through creating a SMART goal for the project, that allows me to identify the smaller components that will be needed to accomplish the goal. I also review those smaller components and go deeper into the details and resources needed to achieve success on completing the smaller components of the goal. With this process, I have been able to have a realistic view of the time, money, people, and other resources needed to complete the project.

Working for a project requires a greater level of resilience. You need to be very good at coordinating with a bunch of team at the same time. Not only that you need to evaluate the progress of each stream, foreseeing the timeline & budget as well. Hence you need to have both macro & microscopic view point for the project. You need to have a clarity on the timeline & budgetary analysis of that as well. Based on this you need to follow either a top down or bottoms up approach to reach in to a conclusion. Tools like PERT chart, three point estimation with the SMART goal can make you on track. You also do a bit of market research for projects of similar categories to get an idea on the timeline, manpower, financial, regulatory requirements.

Bottom-up estimation is a method where you start with the smallest tasks and subtasks and then aggregate them to estimate the project timeline. You can use your team members' input, work breakdown structure, or estimation techniques like PERT or three-point estimation to estimate the duration and effort of each task and subtask.
