The machine coordinate system (MCS) is the fixed reference frame of your CNC machine. It is defined by the machine origin, which is usually located at the end of the travel of each axis. The MCS is also aligned with the machine axes, which are labeled as X, Y, and Z for linear movements, and A, B, and C for rotary movements. The MCS is useful for setting up your machine parameters, such as home position, soft limits, and backlash compensation.
The work coordinate system (WCS) is the variable reference frame of your workpiece. It is defined by the work origin, which is the point on your workpiece that corresponds to the zero point of your program coordinates. The WCS is also aligned with the work axes, which are usually parallel to the machine axes, but can be rotated or shifted by using G-code commands. The WCS is useful for defining your part geometry, dimensions, and orientation in your CNC program.
The tool coordinate system (TCS) is the relative reference frame of your cutting tool. It is defined by the tool tip, which is the point on your tool that contacts the workpiece surface. The TCS is also aligned with the tool axes, which are usually coincident with the work axes, but can be offset or tilted by using G-code commands. The TCS is useful for adjusting your tool length, diameter, and wear compensation in your CNC program.
The main difference between the coordinate systems is their level of permanence and flexibility. The MCS is the most fixed and rigid system, as it is determined by the physical structure of your machine. The WCS is the most variable and adaptable system, as it can be changed by the user according to the workpiece location and orientation. The TCS is the most dynamic and responsive system, as it can be modified by the user according to the tool shape and condition.
The work coordinate system and the tool coordinate system are both calculated from the machine coordinate system. As an example, many 2D lathe programmers do not use work offsets.
The main similarity between the coordinate systems is their function and purpose. The MCS, WCS, and TCS are all used to control and monitor the position and movement of your machine, workpiece, and tool. They are also all based on the Cartesian coordinate system, which uses three perpendicular axes to define a three-dimensional space. They are also all compatible with the G-code language, which uses standard commands and codes to specify the coordinate system and its parameters.
All coordinate systems can be manipulated with G10 commands in the program. I do not recommend trying this unless you really know what you are doing.
The coordinate systems are applied in different stages and levels of your CNC process. The MCS is applied at the machine level, where you set up and calibrate your machine before running your program. The WCS is applied at the program level, where you create and edit your program according to your workpiece specifications. The TCS is applied at the tool level, where you select and adjust your tool according to your cutting requirements.
