I would recommend Photoshop & Procreate for beginners. Procreate has a range of tools that allow you to produce smooth linework before your unaided line-work is up to scratch.

If you are completely new to CAD modelling, I would suggest learning Fusion 360 due to its simpler user interface, workflow and a less difficult learning curve. Over time, if parts and assemblies get complex and technical, Solidworks is a better option due to its stability. Rhino is good for advanced modelling with the addition of grasshopper for CAD models that are not possible to be made in the former ones.

In my experience, Solidworks is the most commonly used CAD software. That being said, many firms are switching to Onshape. Onshape is very similar to solidworks, in terms of interface and modeling thought process. Start with any one of the two. Onshape is available for free (not the pro version though).

Software varies. Geometry does not. Regardless of which software you use, learn how geometry is constructed. If you understand how shapes are made and how computers make shapes, learning new software is much less difficult.

I started working with Solidworks in 2000 give or take a year, while I was ranking my degree. To this day, it remains for me, the most accessible to learn and professional software to work with. If you have your geometry basis well tuned, you will not feel offtrack when starting to work with it. The modeling techniques are sound (they do tend to make you have to come up with alternative solutions in more complex 3d parts, that may seem exasperating), but it gets the job done very well. And then the whole extremely easy pass from 3d to 2d by inserting the part on the drawing sheet is such an advantage in this sort of time consuming tasks. Also, it has it's own render engine, that is pretty decent. Solidworks, all the way.

Consider your specific career goals. 3D is rapidly changing. If you're leaning towards "design for manufacturing" and working with complex surfaces, mastering NUBS modeling in Rhino or Alias for exemple might be more beneficial. On the other hand, if you're interested in a broader range of applications, including game design, animation, product visualisation, Blender's polygonal modeling could be more versatile, you can even do CAD with blender nowadays. i can't stress enough the fact that you are better with a wide range of skills that you slowly nurture as you develop your career instead of mastering only one side of 3d. Modeling something to be made is totally different from modeling it optimized for rendering.

It’s not easy to create photorealistic images with Keyshot but usually that’s not what professional designers need. To be considered together all tools for collaboration are essential today. The seamless, the better. I'm personally having good times with Miro and its thousands apps for any other software, from cloud sharing to presentation to conferencing to anything else. And interesting crossroad for meeting in agile style designers, engineers, businesspeople, internal and external clients.

Collaboration is a maybe the most overlooked aspect of Industrial Design. We aren't artists working in solitude. We need to be collaborating with our counterparts in Marketing, Engineering, Consumer Insights, and Sales on a frequent basis. Sharing images via email is a mess. PowerPoint is great for formal presentations and a headache for anything less. Recently I have become a huge fan of Miro. It is an online whiteboard where you can share images, drop sticky notes, and so much more. Awesome for ad hoc collab sessions, day to day design work... best of all, the learning curve is super short and you don't need to be a designer to use it. Your counterparts will pick it up quickly.

Il faut utiliser des systèmes dédiés appelés PDM (Product Data Management). Il peut y avoir des PDM locaux ou en ligne, intégrés directement ou non au logiciel. Ces PDM, en plus de conserver les fichiers et leurs liens, permettent de gérer les droits d'accès, les révisions, les commentaires, ...

Mural, Miro, Figma and Google Slides/Sheets/Docs work great for collaborative co-design. All tools work well and it’s more about how your team uses them than what software and process they use.

Creativity shouldn't be confined by software knowledge. Too often, we see objects with shapes created in specific ways simply because it was easier for the software to make them that way. It's also unwise to tie all of one's productivity solely to software that could decline or disappear tomorrow. Rely on your own capacity instead to SEE the shapes, and to understand its semiological meaning A shape has a sense, a meaning, a use. Learn how to see that before launching yourself in another physically impossible 3D form to exist just to "innovate" (unless you're a 3D artist and not an industrial designer, of course) Best wishes to all Entry-level designers. Consider that, if you cannot do it by hand, the result in the software will not be so good. Do not forget nor underestimate hands-on skills. Prototype with cardboard, with clay, potatoes, lego, whatever. Paint by hand, draw, move you body and gets your hands dirty. We are designers, we are creators, we have to live that in our boies and not be reduced to or caged into softwares...

industrial design often will cover many domains, materials and manufacturing technologies. so you will need many different softwares, and jump from one to another, no software will cover everything. you many need to create a image that you then use in a rendering software as texture, and later generate a cutting plan that you use in the plotter software. it is important to know how to convert from one file format to another, and the specificity of each file format and which are compatible, and which can be used where.

As Design progresses, so does it's tool. A.I has had significant effect on the discursive process of design. It would be able to articulate the iterations, and especially in the initials steps, of the strategising process. Before a direction is chosen towards the end deliverable, the features desirable, and also those innovative, to see how that effects the end result. Those decisions can be visualised earlier on, to consolidate the feature set, from perspective, of Design, marketing, engineering, production and sustainability. Design is a iterative process, and especially with the ability at A.I generative image, rapid design proposals can be rendered, reducing the risk on the main time-frame for commitment to the precision tools.
