What design principles are essential when creating a brochure?

Before starting any brochure design, I usually get as much information from my client as possible in regards of the main goal of the brochure, targeted audience, even targeted location, as well as getting the vibe from client if the brochure is meant to be a marketing product for the company on the side of it's main goal! It is important to get into the client's head to determine the style and tone of the design. That's step zero in any design strategy.

Before designing a brochure, define its goal and target audience. Determine what action you want readers to take. This guides the content, tone, and style. For product promotion, focus on features and benefits. For events, include dates and details. Tailored content ensures effective communication.

I think most of these apply to all design pieces really, figure out who you are speaking with, and use their (visual) language to ensure your message gets across. Needless to say, if you are making a brochure, there is a reason behind it, a purpose, a message you want to get out there. You emphasize this message

In this new digital and social media world, as well as the lower time of attention and lack of patience to read and flip pages to get the information, I feel the need to choose the right format and number of pages is more crucial than before! the QR codes and infographics are helping a lot in reducing the amount of information and text on the brochure. as for the size, it depends big time on the target audience and the way the brochure is being distributed.

The format is not only a matter of budget, I know I always say this but, your target audience comes first. If your audience has the attention span of a goldfish you have to use a medium that delivers in an instant, if your audience is let's say in the market for a 5-plus million dollar house, well that bifold on regular paper is not going to work for you. The format or the medium is just the vehicle for the message, if you do not deliver it in the right package it won't get opened :)

As a UI designer, I once tackled a cluttered educational app. The disjointed layout was a maze to users. Introducing a grid system was the game-changer. Meh, grid systems.....audience first, go ahead and design a punk rock poster that is meant to convey chaos and angst using that nice grid of yours, see how it conveys....tools are great when used in the right situation, by all means use grids, if it makes sense to use them ;)

O sistema de cores existe para nos direcionar para a composi??o ideal para aquele produto. Ent?o verificar qual seguimento, se há uma paleta e se querem redefinir, faz parte. Estude possibilidades para o produto/marca. Aprendi na faculdade que o clichê sempre se consolida com o público-alvo, ent?o certifique-se que a sua escolha n?o criará o efeito reverso, e se for necessário utilizar o básico, aposte nisso que possivelmente será a melhor op??o para seu trabalho.

Using color theory, like complementary or analogous schemes, can create visual harmony and make your brochure more appealing. Moreover, tapping into color psychology can help you connect with your audience on an emotional level. For instance, using red to convey urgency or blue for professionalism can influence how people perceive your message. So, choose your brochure colors thoughtfully to effectively communicate your brand and message.

Assim como as cores, a escolha de fonte é importante para que no final tudo transmita a mensagem que deseja passar, com clareza e assertividade. Evite fontes padr?es dos sistema do computador, busque qual o estilo deseja passar. Algo mais formal? Utilize uma serifada. Mais infantil? Fontes arredondas d?o essa sensa??o. Teste possibilidades em pesos diferentes e n?o utilize muitas fontes, isso n?o garante um resultado bom para seu trabalho.

Simple rule of thumb, the fewer the number of fonts the better, functionality first, aesthetics close second. What i mean is, make the font legible! if your audience is in their 50s and you give them this tiny little 8pt helvetica that looks so clean and cool, specially when you drop the opacity to say 70%.....they won't be able to read it, they may appreciate the aesthetic qualities of this thing they can't read, sure, but you missed the opportunity to deliver your message because you were too hung up on aesthetics :)

These one-size-fits-all things are a slippery slope, if you are talking about photographs from the '60s, your blurry low-res image is exactly what conveys...not the 8k super sharp AI generated extra crispy image. Blurry, pixelated, and even low-res, they have their place, they can convey meaning if used correctly. Also, I usually try and edge away from anything that starts with "always or never" and always (ha, see what I did there?) think about the piece before starting, reach your own conclusions as to why you are using the approach you are using before putting down the first pixel! :)

In my experience, there are situations when you have to think about cutting some content to be able to follow the canvas size restriction without reducing the font size, letter spacing, or line height in a way that will look unprofessional and ugly. My best plan is to be brave and work on summarizing the content without losing its value and meaning, and with today's AI technologies any chat can summarize content effectively.
