Rather than using objectives, I find that roadmaps are way more powerful and effective. Why? Because we live in a complex world with moving parts. Tradeoffs are inherent and embedded. With objectives, there is an underlying sense of singular assumptions AND singular understanding of the business world. Look at what you're selling, who's buying, and where your customers are coming from—that's your sales data. Feedback from customers is super helpful too—it tells you what they like and don't like. Keep an eye on your money stuff—expenses, how much you're making, and where it's coming from. Also, peek at reports about your industry and what's happening in the economy. Staying updated helps build a strategy that works!

When you start with a roadmap at the beginning, the communication of your data -- and more importantly your insights becomes second nature. Effective communication can naturally flow because you want to keep all the moving parts of your roadmap in sync and tracking in the right direction. Even more powerful is when you are using your insights to create two-way communication with your clients and your stakeholders. By having insights that spark curiosity, interest, questions and reactions, you are naturally positioned to receive a spectrum of feedback from your clients and your stakeholders. This then deepens the feedback loop of their needs, challenges and aspirations and the direction of your business strategy roadmap.
