Customer feedback is very important but also can be biased. The most successful features/products I’ve launched have had users be a major part of the alpha/beta rollouts. This shows skin in the game for your users as well as an open dialogue leads to a better product long term. It’s also important to find the right type of customers who can be a part of this process and understand their enthusiasm levels without them being overly verbose.

Drawing from experience, competitor analysis is a strategic pillar in MVP development. By scrutinizing rival products, we unveiled market gaps and niches. Competitor analysis should definitely done to understand gaps and hence create better value. But, in a growing industry it needs to be done to understand the currently established user behavior. While launching new products there is always an effort to stand out, have differentiators and USP but it should not come at a cost of changing established user behavior. In essence we need to add value on top of what works in the industry and not create different solutions to make it work.

What I would suggest is to prioritize those fields: First and foremost, we want the solution to be of value to the user. But it is not limited to just one statement. The solution must also be profitable for the organization that produces it and must be able to measure success. The more data we can collect at the MVP stage, the better. I think that an analysis of competition and market trends should be done earlier so at the stage when we deliver MVP we should be focused on the results, metrics and customer feedback as a priority.

The features in the MVP will depend on the problem being addressed and solved. If you have existing competitors make your product at par in the competing areas and work on the USPs. If you are one of a kind in the industry, make sure once consumer have experienced the product, they find great value(and no alternatives to solve their current needs) to make a repeat purchase/visit to your product.

This mix helps you build a product that's right on target, giving your business a strong start and a clear direction. In my experience, a good MVP should be focused around a user problem. There are many examples of failed products built as "walking skeletons" that product teams scoped down to prepare for the initial launch without ensuring sufficient value would be delivered to users. Customer centricity is key during the first phases of a product's life and an MVP should fully resolve a pain point that the product is aimed at addressing. JTBD framework and KANO can be used as good methodologies to understand what truly needs to be there in order to solve a customer need and the scope of an MVP should take that into account.
