Learning loss leads to indigenous knowledge loss as well. In the education domain, over the decades some of the stark losses in science and mathematics textbooks in Indian languages have been the local/colloquial units of measurement and the digit symbols in vernacular languages. Standardized units may help better in content translation, but the disconnect between the on and off-campus usage invariably forces the stakeholders to pick the dominant version. Unless the minority voice is given space to counter this linguistic standardization-centric hegemony, the language loss will go unabated.

In a large-scale assessment of student learning across grades creating multiple-choice questions is a challenge. 1. The rules of grammar are vastly different, say Hindi and Tamil. So those MCQs need an entirely new set keeping the competency and difficulty level intact. 2. Idiomatic expressions in one language may never have an equivalent in another language even within the same language family. 3. Even for a 'neutral' subject like mathematics the symbols for numbers (say the number symbol 9 in English and the number symbol 2 in Oriya) are visually very similar, causing a temporary cognitive dissonance. Till machine translations evolve, bilingual teachers have been saviors offering context, informality, and age-appropriateness.
