Often the two are combined, using unsupervised learning to discover statistically significant clusters and behaviours, then feeding those into a supervise model to arrive at a predicted outcome.

Sometimes you want something that is a close match to what you already have because the “optimal” solution strays too far from real-world conditions. In practice, even when QML becomes more available and viable, effective data science will continue to be a blend of classical and quantum approaches.

In my case, training a QNN for a classification problem resulted in vanishing gradients, making the network difficult to optimise. The lack of smooth gradients not only slows down training but can also cause the model to converge to suboptimal solutions.

There are major algorithmic challenges in designing quantum algorithms with provable advantages over classical counterparts and optimizing variational quantum circuits. The QML software ecosystem is still immature, lacking standardization and large-scale benchmarks.
