What criteria should you use when selecting images for your studio photography portfolio?

Quality and technical excellence are undoubtedly important factors when choosing images for your portfolio. However, I would argue that emotion holds equal significance, particularly for photographers who already have a showcase of their technical ability. It's essential to consider how a photo resonates with viewers emotionally, beyond just recalling the photographer's own feelings during its capture. One common challenge I've encountered with photographers is their attachment to the experience of taking an image, which can sometimes hinder their ability to perceive how their audience might react to the same image.

The Quality of studio portrait images are very important. We are talking of sharpness, distance, framing, exposure and even white balance. Well, you can always work around the white balance when you shoot in raw so let’s put that aside. But more so, do not compromise on your sharpness. For studio portrait, I would shoot at 2.8-4.0 aperture. If I want an aesthetic look I might go lower than 2.8 depending on opening of my aperture. Make sure your image is shape enough and not blurry. You don’t need to turn your sharpness high in camera either but whatever you do, make sure you get a focused image. Don’t compromise on that.

Y el toque final: exportar las imágenes a un tama?o adecuado, con o sin bordes, para imprimir o compartir en medios digitales, etc.

Acredito que atualmente, podemos classificar 2 tipos de fotografias. As comerciais e as autotrais. Na linha das fotos comerciais, qualidade e excelência técnica, s?o essenciais, já que comercialmente estaremos "falando" de alguém, de alguma empresa ou de algum produto. Isso faz toda a diferen?a. Nesse caso, seu domínio em ilumina??o, enquadramento, composi??o s?o quesitos fundamentais para captar uma boa imagem e contar essas histórias de forma harmoniosa e, em muitos casos, com apelo vendedor. Já no caso da fotografia autoral, creio que o mais importante, é a criatividade. A aplica??o de boas técnica, claro, fazem alguma diferen?a, mas uma imagem com criatividade, chamam mais a aten??o. Essa é minha opini?o.

As a headshot photographer, we select images for our portfolio that show our wide range of clients - we want everyone to be able to see themselves represented on our website. If you offer a wide variety of lighting options, show that. If you have a signature lighting style, stick to that. Ultimately, your portfolio should reflect the work you want to continue offering future clients. Update your portfolio regularly and always ask permission from people before adding images of them in your marketing.

En mi experiencia como fotógrafa freelance detecté que si bien es importante incluir variedad de fotografías, es igualmente importante definir nuestro nicho antes de diversificarnos en estilos y usos fotográficos que no seremos capaces de sostener a largo plazo. Mi recomendación es identificar nuestras fortalezas e intereses a futuro, y construir nuestro nicho a partir de ello. De este modo daremos con los clientes que nos necesitan, evitando trabajar en proyectos que no sean fieles a nuestros intereses, capacidades y deseos.

If you want to find a job, the most popular in the job market, and you want to belong to the standard, you'll have to be versatile in presenting the images and categories in your portfolio. For example - You think you shouldn't put this photo? Don't think. Just trust your gut.

Focus on what you do best. When a client is looking for a photographer they want an expert. Not one who seems to shoot everything. A confused mind says no, so try and keep your portfolio in line with what you want to be known for. You don't want your headshots to be mixed up with wedding photography. Or your food images in amongst baby portraits. Keep it clear and on point to you give your clients a real insight into what you're great at.
