An open mind is necessary for strategic thinking. Ideas can come from a variety of sources including people in any role. One of the most brilliant executives in my career was a person who would ask people their opinions about conditions affecting their ability to be successful or challenged. After asking a question, he would actively and intently listen to take it all in. I imagined gears turning in his brain to incorporate that information into his strategic plan.

2 Systems thinking

Systems thinking is the ability to understand and influence the interrelationships and dynamics of complex systems that affect your organization and its stakeholders. A strategic thinking leader with systems thinking can see the big picture, identify the root causes and leverage points, and anticipate the consequences and implications of actions and decisions. Systems thinking also involves being aware of the external and internal factors, trends, and forces that shape the system and create opportunities and threats. Executive coaching can help you develop systems thinking by helping you map out the system, analyze its patterns and behaviors, and design interventions that can create positive change.

Critical thinking is the ability to apply logic, reasoning, and evidence to evaluate and solve problems and make decisions. A strategic thinking leader with critical thinking can identify and challenge assumptions, biases, and fallacies, gather and interpret relevant data and information, and generate and compare alternative solutions and outcomes. Critical thinking also involves being curious, skeptical, and reflective, and seeking feedback and learning from mistakes. Executive coaching can help you develop critical thinking by providing you with tools and frameworks to structure your thinking, ask powerful questions, and assess your decisions and actions.

Critical thinking is about asking the right questions. It is a process starting from understanding facts, such as what the situation is/what this is about, where and when this is taking place, and who this is by/who is involved. Once you gather this background information, you need to analyze the data by asking more questions. Questions to analyze the data are about how this happened, how each part fits the story, why this happened and why not something else, and finally what if this was wrong, what if there was a problem and what the alternatives are. Finally, you need to evaluate the evidence and identify the consequences and any recommendations. Questions to ask are: whether this is convincing or not and what needs doing now.

4 Creative thinking

Creative thinking is the ability to generate and implement novel and useful ideas that can address challenges and opportunities and add value to the organization and its stakeholders. A strategic thinking leader with creative thinking can think outside the box, challenge the status quo, and experiment with new approaches and methods. Creative thinking also involves being flexible, adaptable, and resilient, and embracing uncertainty and ambiguity. Executive coaching can help you develop creative thinking by encouraging you to tap into your imagination, intuition, and emotions, and by creating a safe and supportive space for you to express your ideas and test your assumptions.

A collaborative mindset is the ability to build and maintain positive and productive relationships with diverse and interdependent people and groups that share a common vision and goal. A strategic thinking leader with a collaborative mindset can leverage the strengths, perspectives, and resources of others, foster trust and mutual respect, and facilitate effective communication and coordination. A collaborative mindset also involves being empathetic, inclusive, and respectful, and seeking win-win solutions and outcomes. 6 Action orientation

Action orientation is the ability to translate your vision, plans, and ideas into concrete and measurable actions and results. A strategic thinking leader with action orientation can prioritize and execute the most critical and impactful tasks, delegate and empower others, and monitor and evaluate progress and performance. Action orientation also involves being proactive, accountable, and committed, and celebrating and rewarding achievements and successes. Executive coaching can help you develop action orientation by helping you set SMART goals, create action plans, and track and review your actions and results.

Leaders often do think strategically because their role requires them to think about a range of scenarios, gather information, and make decisions not just for the here and now but for the long term. When coaching executives, I help people see how here and when they already have been 'strategic' and how to further refine that skill by creating space to step back and think about the direction of travel.
