What are common problems that Product Managers face and how can you solve them?

The prioritisation method that a PM chooses can also depend on whether they are working at a startup or well-established corporate. In an early-stage company, there's typically much less data to base your decision on, and also fewer technical constraints from legacy systems. This means that the process is often more 'gut-feel' and because you're able to move faster, it's less about making the wrong step and more about iterating through that quickly. The challenge in larger companies is that whilst you might have more data to make a decision, it won't necessarily be the right one. Your assessment of RICE factors (Reach, Impact, Confidence, Effort) may all still be wrong.

Prioritization is a problem that needs to be fixed upstream. Product Managers often struggle with vision and strategy. They can overlook how their contribution will align with their company's business goals. It's also challenging for PMs to predict the intended impact their contributions will make on the industry. Thinking a few steps beyond their work and developing vision will help PMs better launch and contribute to products. The business vision and goals inform the strategy, which informs the roadmap, which leads to a logical prioritization of the features. If the upstream elements are well established and understood, it becomes easier for PMs to justify feature priorities and explain choices to stakeholders.

Aligning with your stakeholder and vice versa. Like it or not, stakeholders always want something added along the way, which are most times outside the initial plan. Here’s how you can navigate this: 1. Listen to them during meetings, hear them out, you can’t afford to shut your ears to their ideas. 2. Analyse their suggestions clearly, think about the impact on the overall business goal, and ensure to document all your findings and analysis. 3. Share your thoughts with them, with proper documentation, letting them see reasons with you. They’ll either agree with you or disagree. If they chose the latter, then you can have your documents properly stored, so in future times (if something doesn’t go as planned) you can refer to that document.

In real life the framework does not work completely. The sales team will ask you to build this feature, the marketing team will build that feature & maybe your manager will expect you to do something else. If you have any opportunity to make the decision. First understand the position of your product. What is the current situation? Is it in an MVP stage or even more mature. Feature requests will come, no matter where your Product stands. Stick to the plan you have & then compare the impact. Check other competitors for the same features. And how can I make it innovative. Some products are busy in solving the problem that they forget to take care of the user experience & blindly build the features. Always focus on quality over quantity.

Scope creep is considered as one of the common phenomena of the product journey. Managing scope creep may become a bit difficult in an uncertain or instable market, where priorities change continuously. While focus is a key element in product development, flexibility and the team's ability to effectively change directions are a key asset to product organizations in their quest for competitive advantage. However, managing scope creep relies on an effective evaluation, decision, and communication processes in order to keep control of the alignment of the product growth with the initial vision.

Prioritize features based on their impact and value. Use techniques like MoSCoW prioritization and focus on delivering a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) to meet core user needs before adding more features.

To manage scope creep, clearly define project boundaries, and stick to them. Regularly review and approve any changes with stakeholders. Prioritize tasks and resist adding new features that don't align with initial goals. Keep communication open with your team to ensure understanding and agreement on the project's scope.

Scope creeps can easily delay any program milestone if not handled with right trade off mechanisms. There should be clear mechanisms established in place where any scope creep needs to go through established chnage control approval process that takes into account right trade offs or change in POR, before commitment.

One mistake that most of us do and I myself have done, is over committing. Being the link between all the teams, a PM should be aware of the capacity in which a team can deliver under certain pressure and timelines. By over committing some stakeholders might be out of sync and that might lead to a failed feature of the product which is less beneficial to the customers for the longer run. It’s essential to discuss the requirements with the stakeholders and together come to a middle ground and then commit. This will save time, build trust and provide positive results.

Collaboration should start from the ideation stage. All the stakeholders should know what & why are we making it. Then only each & every stakeholder will be able to create impact towards the growth of the product. And most of challenges will be solved from here only. Ask them to use the product/feature, take constructive feedback. Talk about your competitiors with them. Ask them to do your research before hand. Explain them about your vision, your TG (Target group or Audience) Collaboration is not an easy task. It takes a lot of time & planning, especially when you have limited time.

One thing I do when uncertainty or ambiguity starts piling up is to take a step back and re-calibrate against the larger goal. If I consider that I am say 9 months in to a 2 year journey, then it feels okay that while there are unknowns, we have time to figure it out. Zooming out reminds me that the task wasn't meant to be easy, and that it's why I have a job. One last thought.. doing some thinking about how the uncertainty might play out helps me narrow the possibilities. You don't necessarily have to predict the future, but you may be able to rule out scenarios, and that may guide how you plan next steps.

The PM has a virtually unbound scope, so they can't succeed if they attempt to do everything. It's important for the PM to work in a T shape, building a broad, continuous inflow of customer, market data, and feedback (the horizontal bar), and then outside of this the PM must go all-in on the specific problem and solution they are working with team(s) to bring to market. The two keys here are an integrated approach when going broad (there must be a sustainable set of habits that incorporate new feature followup), clearing the way for that crucial focus on the current project.

I would also add another challenge, which is: being able to take care of themselves and avoiding burnout. I have been a Product Owner / Manager myself, and have coached and mentored many others, and this is something I often see. The workload is beyond what they can manage, and the complexity and need for research and deep thinking just adds to the load. Most of them end up becoming unwell at some point... this is definitely something we, as a community, need to talk about and think about ways to mitigate.
