What are the common mistakes to avoid when presenting remotely?

This is a critical component. What features will you utilize? What are its limitations? Will you be hosting or presenting from home or another location? Will you be screen-sharing? Is a chat room valuable to the experience? Will polls, emojis, and backgrounds be available or necessary? All of these elements must be confronted in order to deftly communicate your message.

Avoid tech issues with equipment, engage the audience actively, curate a professional background, manage time effectively, rehearse thoroughly, ensure good lighting, encourage interaction, stay focused without multitasking, plan for connectivity glitches, and optimize visuals for remote viewing. Additionally, steer clear of dense or cluttered slides, neglecting backup plans for unforeseen disruptions, and forgetting to test interactive tools. Be mindful of your virtual presence, maintaining a professional demeanor, and acknowledging the challenges of remote communication. Regularly adapt your approach based on audience cues, fostering a dynamic and inclusive remote presentation experience.

Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse. Master what you're doing so others can understand it in the way that you want them to. Be clear, and concise with everything and personally, take questions throughout rather than just at the end where possible.

The platform needs to be user-friendly else time can be invested in exploring features and usability rather than the ultimate goal of the meeting. The quality of audio and video is a key aspect to consider else the seriousness of the meeting might deviate stakeholders. One of the key aspects is the "Security and Privacy" of the platform because sensitive information is always being shared via a platform, hence the platform's security and policy measures should be kept on the top.

Our patience with virtual issues has waned since COVID had us sitting in front of our computer at home, waiting for someone to figure things out. Nailing the presentation from the onset requires preparation. How comfortable are you with the virtual platform? If not, get there by practicing with a co-worker or a friend. Do you know the options available on the platform, and are you comfortable using as many as necessary to elevate the virtual to your desired level? Finally, work on everything before your virtual, and then be ready 15-20 minutes before the start to assure yourself that you're ready to deliver your message effectively.

By this point, most of us either currently are, or have worked remotely. Testing your equipment before presenting is a must-do. Conducting practice sessions using the equipment in a simulated environment helps you become comfortable with its use and identify any potential issues beforehand. If you anticipate common problems and practice troubleshooting beforehand you can address them quickly during the presentation.

Kind of goes without saying. Nothing worse then leaving it until the last minute to jump onto a teams call to find the laptop or platform needs an update or there is an issue with the camera settings (backgrounds for example). I tend to load in 15 minutes before I present a training course to ensure it can be delivered without any issues at the start, as a poor start doesn’t bode well for the rest of the session!

Consider that even when testing equipment and tools for a presentation, things can always change and things can go wrong. The client can change the meeting at the last minute to use google meet instead of MS Teams, the slide pack can become corrupted, or connection issues can hinder the ability to have screen sharing options, especially for remote areas. Prepare by having a backups. Will you distribute slides via email prior to the call? Will you ensure you have all of the commonly used presentation tolls configured on your computer so it has less impact if the meeting tool is changed? Will you have an alternate way for people to contribute if they don't have the technical ability to use the visual tool you have selected for a workshop?

Choose a quiet and well-lit space for the presentation. You don’t want to get distracted while presenting and want to ensure good visibility.
