I agree; however, beyond researching the company there should be a genuine interest in contributing to the organization's success. In specific, you should recognize that the organization is investing in your learning experience, and this is time that could be redirected to someone not only interested in securing the internship but more importantly someone committed to demonstrating the value that they'll be able to bring to the organization as a result of their past experiences or zeal for learning new skills. Lastly, another point to consider is that employers have choices, and they'd rather choose someone who views the internship opportunity as more than a formality for school credit or a steppingstone to the job of their dreams.

That research should also include knowing their pain points. What are they working towards and how can you contribute to it, what fresh perspective could you bring to the table.

Common mistakes when applying for internships include not researching the company, sending generic applications, ignoring instructions, overlooking networking opportunities, neglecting soft skills, failing to follow up, being overly self-critical, lacking enthusiasm, and not seeking feedback. In my experience, anyone who's opted to submit the same resume for any open vacancy and not take the time to tailor it has carried that same lack of attention into the job, if selected. Note whether you're seeking a volunteer or paid opportunity, there is tremendous value in conveying to the hiring manager that you've taken the opportunity serious and if selected, would demonstrate the same attention to detail.
