What are the common challenges of implementing circular design principles?

For designers to consider a whole system view, they will need to understand the vital role procurement and supply chain management plays. It is impossible to achieve the benefits of adopting circular principles without understanding the origin of products and materials, how they are made and under what conditions.

One of the biggest challenge is our existing take-make-waste system has trained us to see short term benefits. Right from business models, product design to revenue everything we do in business is focused on short-termism and lacks system thinking where whole life cycle of product should be accounted for right at idea, design & planning stage. So to implement circularity, we need to bring long-termism & whole life cycle thinking before we judge the ideas and eliminate them. At our social enterprise Sustainability Tribe, one of initiative is #ZeroWasteUAE which spread across Asia & Middle East we have been educating civil societies and business communities about this long termism and system thinking to build circularity culture.

The implementation of circular design principles, while transformative, is not without its complexities. At the forefront is the challenge of recalibrating established linear systems, necessitating a paradigm shift in product development and supply chain strategies. Embracing circularity often requires a meticulous reevaluation of existing infrastructures, which can be both time-consuming and resource-intensive. Additionally, fostering collaboration across industries and ensuring a seamless integration of CD principles into diverse sectors present formidable challenges. Striking the right balance between innovation and adherence to regulatory frameworks is crucial, as is the need to educate them about the long-term benefits of circularity.

Innovation in the circular economy is necessary to increase the lifespan of the raw materials used for production. If we find ways to repair, repurpose, recycle, upcycle or re-manufacture products, giving them a new lease of life, less raw materials will be needed in the future. Subsequently, there will also be less waste produced.

Designers, partnering with diverse experts, tackle the challenge of creating circular, functional, and desirable products. Yet, the essential duo of innovation and collaboration introduces hurdles in communication, coordination, and evaluation. In the world of circular principles, progress relies on the seamless interplay of these two dynamic forces.

Implementing circular design principles often clashes with existing regulations and infrastructure designed for a linear economy. From my experience as an energy auditor, I saw how policies favoring traditional material use create barriers for circular design. For example, finding recycled materials for construction was challenging due to regulatory and supply limitations. Actionable advice: Designers should advocate for regulatory changes supporting circular economy, like circular procurement policies or extended producer responsibilities. Adapting designs to current conditions while seeking transformative opportunities is key to advancing circular design principles in the existing linear economy framework.

Consumer Acceptance - Convincing consumers to choose products designed for longevity over cheaper, disposable options. I recall a project where we had to extensively market the long-term value of our circular-designed products. Supply Chain Complexity - Integrating circular design often complicates the supply chain. I've seen companies struggle to source sustainable materials consistently. Cost Implications - Initial costs can be higher. A client once hesitated to invest in circular design due to upfront expenses, despite long-term savings. Regulatory Hurdles - Navigating varying regulations can be challenging. In one international project, differing recycling laws across countries complicated the design process.

I feel an understandable challenge some will face is hesitancy and push-back from wider stakeholders due to unfamiliarity of the topic. Whilst change can be good, it isn't always welcomed, particularly if change means less convenience for people. Education and awareness is important at an early stage to highlight the why, what, where and by when to any circular economy programme

Implementing circular design principles often poses challenges of any new topic, particularly for engineers unfamiliar with the concept. Upskilling becomes crucial to bridge this knowledge gap. Also, addressing concerns early over ROI with a robust business case is vital, as upfront investments can differ significantly from traditional linear design models. Finally, it is important to acknowledge that a perfect circular model may not fit all industries today. Embrace the three core principles—eliminating waste, keeping materials in use, and regenerating natural systems and encouraging step-by-step progress rather than aiming for a perfect solution from the start fosters a smoother transition to circular design.
