What cloud security trends should you know?

Contrary to what some may think, (honestly, some folks really made it seem that way) the zero trust model is not a one-size-fits-all security solution. It's not a magical shield that eliminates all security risks, nor is it a single tool. Rather, it's a holistic security strategy or approach to security that challenges traditional trust assumptions. It's a comprehensive strategy that combines various technologies & practices. While ZT involves network security, zero trust extends beyond that encompassing IAM, encryption, continuous monitoring etc It’s also important to note that zero trust model doesn't guarantee absolute security (there is no absolute security!). Advanced threats can still find their way.

In my opinion; based on learning and experience, the following cloud security trend, at the very least, should receive the attention of every cloud security professional 1. Cloud Security Governance: with focus on cloud due diligence 2. Cloud Economics: with focus on cost/benefit analysis of transitioning to the cloud 3. Cyber psychology as it affects cloud: with focus on how human behavior could put cloud security at risk 4. Secure Cloud Application development: with focus on build secure application for cloud use leverage secure application development principles 5. Cloud Security Architecture: with focus on architecting cloud infrastructure with security in mind and not just for functional purposes.

The zero trust model is very crucial in understanding cloud security trends. Meaning every transaction must be authenticated and authorized. No one inside or out the organization must be trusted. This strengthens security and limits access to resources .

People tend to over complicate this to sound sophisticated... Let's keep it simple. My suggestion would be to firstly, keep up with cloud security trends for safety. Yes, we should know to use a zero trust security and consistent policies for multi-cloud use while including cloud-native tools and encryption protect data. Key Tip: Monitor security in real-time and train yourself or teams. These key aspects should ensure a strong cloud security in today's digital world.

As a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), adopting the Zero Trust model in the cloud involves critical considerations: Pros: 1. Heightened Security Posture 2. Threat Mitigation 3. Compliance Assurance 4. Reduced Attack Surface 5. Scalability and Flexibility Cons: 1. Implementation Complexity 2. Operational Overhead 3. User Experience Challenges 4. Resistance to Change In conclusion, while Zero Trust offers compelling security advantages for our cloud infrastructure, we must carefully navigate the complexities and operational challenges to ensure a successful implementation while prioritizing both security and user experience.

Cloud-native app security solutions are now offered by infrastructure providers due to increased cyber threats. Companies must rethink security strategies for app development and deployment, as the threat surface has expanded. Effective solutions simplify management, provide visibility, and ensure resiliency through integrations across the app lifecycle. It's crucial to take cloud-native security seriously and protect organizations from bad actors exploiting vulnerabilities.

In my opinion, If an organisation/customer leases either IaaS or PaaS from a CSP like AWS or GCP, its critical to understand the responsibilities of the CSP, customer and the shared responsibilities. The lines are a little blurry but in both cases, customer is responsible for application sec, data sec, endpoint security and user Identity management. Hence, they need to build security into all these facets at every stage. Now, compliance is a big one..it is a shared responsibility between the CSP and customer hence orgs need to work with their providers to ensure alignment with regulations.

I believe that cloud-native security solutions should be the first option considered when looking for ways to secure cloud-based applications and infrastructure. However, it is important to make sure that the cloud-native security solution meets the specific needs of the organization. Cloud-native security solutions are designed to work seamlessly with cloud-based resources. This makes it easy for organizations to deploy and manage cloud-native security solutions.

Many Good CNAPP solutions are available and will be helpful going more granular level analysing the weaknesses and strengthen the route to prevent from attacks.

AI and ML offers several advantages: 1. Real-time Threat Detection: AI and ML can analyze vast amounts of data quickly and detect anomalies, facilitating real-time identification of potential threats. 2. Predictive Analysis: Machine learning models can be trained to anticipate future threats based on historical data, allowing for proactive security measures. 3. Automated Response: AI can help automate responses to certain recognized threats, reducing the time between threat detection and mitigation.

Human errors are at the core of most online security issues, constituting over 80% of all incidents, as noted by the Harvard Business Review. Despite increased training efforts to curb these errors, they persist. AI could potentially help diminish these errors and fraud with greater precision than humans. However an over-reliance on AI can lead to its own set of problems, including data manipulation and fostering a false sense of security among individuals. It remains essential to continue educating people about potential risks and not solely depend on technology for safety. Effective leadership is vital in fostering a secure online environment where technology and human expertise collaborate to shield us from online attacks and negligence.

AI and ML technologies can provide powerful solutions for ensuring cloud security, including detecting and preventing security threats, automating access control and authorization, enhancing data encryption and privacy, improving incident response and recovery, and ensuring compliance and governance. Investing in these technologies is essential for safeguarding data and maintaining business continuity as cloud computing continues to rise in popularity.

AI and ML have been around for a really long time. These two interdependent technologies have been build into multiple solutions that customers use on a day to day basis. Before an organisation can be AI driven, they need to be data driven. So lets take a step back and start with the data part. Some questions for an organisation to ask themselves before diving int AI and ML. 1. Which cyber assets do we have in our environment? 2. How do we collect telemetry from these cyber assets? 3. How do we store & process this data to produce valuable insights? 4. How do we correlate data from multiple technologies, APis, Threat Intelligence sources e.t.c 5. What would AI and ML do for us? Real time detection, predictions, Orchestration e.t.c

As AI and ML algorithms require data to train on, the first concern arises about what data is being used and how it is being handled. When company-sensitive information is uploaded to cloud-based AI or ML services, you have to ask: who has access to this data? Is it solely the algorithms, or are there human operators involved? Moreover, what happens to the data post-processing? Is it stored? If so, for how long, and how securely?

Cloud computing is undoubtedly a promising technology for IT applications. However, the issue of data security and privacy cannot be overlooked. Organizations, understandably, hesitate to transfer their crucial data to the cloud without establishing a solid foundation of trust. While data security experts have proposed techniques for data protection, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to make cloud computing a more acceptable option for consumers. The safety of data is a top priority, and it is imperative that all measures are taken to ensure its protection.

Let us understand that the #cloud is a shared-responsibility model. The responsibilities are shared b/w the CSP, your organization and of course the customer (many times the roles and responsibilities of the customer is forgotten). eg- Configuration of the various components, process, services by the consumer should be carefully and at the same time done in full coverage. This is where I always recommend to document and maintain a #cloud-responsibility-matrix detailing the responsibilities in every domain/area against each of the stakeholders involved in overall operations and delivery of cloud. Mandate a process to have a Cloud Responsibility Matrix documented, published, communicated, and adhered by all teams and stakeholders.

One of the most misconceptions in cloud security is that most cloud service customers(CSC) assume they can relegate the responsibility of security to the cloud service provider(CSP). That said, it is imperative that cloud customers understand the regulations which affect their specific cloud deployment eg PCI-DSS for card payment services. Majority of the top 5 cloud service providers do come with compliance certifications out of the box which can be validated by the client by simply requesting for a self assessment. While certain industries are still hesitant to move to the cloud because of limitations of their in country regulations, most cloud services are more aligned to data protection and privacy as opposed to on-prem solutions.

Data protection and privacy are non-negotiable priorities for any organization leveraging cloud services. Compliance with regulations like GDPR, CCPA, and PCI DSS is not just a legal necessity but also a cornerstone of trust between an organization and its stakeholders. The focus should always be on implementing a multi-layered security approach, with Data Governance, involving encryption, backup, and robust access controls, to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data. This not only mitigates risks but also optimizes business performance by ensuring data is both secure and accessible for legitimate use cases.

Elaborate on Cloud Security Skills maybe? You wouldn't want folks to be trying to pen test the cloud right away... direct them towards Threat Modeling the Cloud isntead.

I think that cloud security skills and awareness are not enough to ensure the security of the cloud environment. There are other factors that need to be considered and addressed, such as cloud security governance, compliance, architecture, and operations. These factors involve having a clear vision, strategy, policy, and framework for managing and monitoring the cloud security activities and outcomes. Cloud security skills and awareness are necessary but not sufficient for achieving cloud security. They need to be complemented by other cloud security factors that can ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the cloud data and services.

Everyone is responsible for cybersecurity. Its not just the cybersecurity engineers. Before we can protect, we need to educate. Running security awareness training and programs within your company is extremely essential to help employees undesrtand what it is, why it is needed, how they can protect themselves. It makes employees cyber conscious and helps them know who to reach out to incase of a suspicious event (like phishing email). Training should be a continuous effort.

Cloud providers do have certain upskilling certifications eg AWS Security Specialist, Azure Security Engineer etc. These are quite helpful for companies who would want in-house security expertise which positions the company. Additionally, there are general cloud security standards and courses that are offered by 3rd party providers such as Udemy, eDx etc.

Integration is key. Every cloud security vendor needs to leave an open door for integration with third parties. This is primarily for information sharing across platforms. This provides unparalleled visibility across a customers environment hence enabling faster threat detection and response within the environment. One of the coolest use cases I have seen so far is with the modern SIEM and SOAR solutions which go over and beyond integration by implementing automation and orchestration through workbooks and playbooks. This saves so much time for security analysts within organisations. Its only through collaboration and integration that we can effectively protect users, data and assets.

Collaboration is importantly required to understand data objects and analysis done so to arrive common goals and action items. Many cloud security vendors can contribute for such projects. Analysis results and outcome to implement common control will help and in faster way.

SaaS deployment models are - all things equal - more secure than customer-managed ones due to faster vulnerability remediation and better internal monitoring. Despite this, many security teams apply stricter scrutiny to SaaS solutions due to lack of direct observability. This behavior creates a counterproductive cycle, mimicking a prisoner's dilemma, where vendors are less transparent about security, fueling further mistrust. Both parties should aim for a 'truce'—customers should focus on technical due diligence rather than security theater, while vendors should maximize transparency and participate in bug bounty programs. The ultimate goal is to realize that SaaS usually offers better security and operational advantages for both parties.

Multi-cloud and Hybrid cloud security is yet another growing trend. As organizations adopt multiple cloud providers and hybrid solutions, there will continue to be an emphasis on security solutions that can span different environments.

At the core, cloud security is essentially a third party risk. Based on recent cloud incidents - consideration could be - Thorough due diligence and due care of CSP security - Cloud compliance assessment - Cloud posture assessment - Cloud asset protection - Cloud DLP - Cloud DDoS - Zero trust - Cloud Audits

For multi-cloud environments, it is essential to provide a security not just for each cloud independently, but for the entire enterprise cloud space. Such a cross-cloud approach to security is inevitably an emerging trend.
