What cloud security testing techniques can you use to identify and fix vulnerabilities?

Cloud and hybrid-cloud networks should be secure by design. That sounds easy and broad, but what I need to emphasize is that secure by design is a different mind-set than "zero trust", check the box, one size fits all. We (industry) must stop relying on machine-to-machine encryption tunnels and encrypt your data at its source, process-to-process. This is one example of secure by design. Cloud security testing is crucial for safeguarding. Use techniques like vulnerability scanning to pinpoint known vulnerabilities and prioritize fixes. Penetration testing simulates attacks to uncover undetected vulnerabilities, while specialized testing focuses on cloud-based applications and infrastructure, revealing unique vulnerabilities. Incorporate threat modeling to identify potential threats hidden by other techniques. Regularly revisiting and optimizing these techniques is essential to maintaining an adequate defense safeguarding organizational data and infrastructure.

We need to focus on the problem at hand. Testing within the cloud needs to be a holistic activity covering the infrastructure, code that runs on it, and software dependencies that are required for normal operation. Once we understand the threat landscape, we must start applying some testing controls. Those typically are Static, Dynamic, and mobile application security testing (or SAST, DAST, MAST) but also Open-Source Dependency scanning as well as Infrastructure as code security testing. Additionally, AWS WAF and Macie protect web applications and sensitive data, while CloudTrail records API activities. Users are responsible for configuring these tools and following best practices for a secure AWS environment.

Nessus (or OpenVAS+Greenbone) for vulnerability scanning. Then Metasploit on those vulns. Of course, a detailed and explicit list of tools would be beyond scope, as the Qualified Person that is performing the assessments will already be well aware of the tools. That said, Nmap, as mentioned, is likely one of the first tools reached for when doing recon to discover interesting ports to target on a host or network, and will occasionally inform even an application’s developers of ports they aren’t even aware of being listened on, perhaps as a side effect of some 3rd party component - or even a debug mode someone failed to toggle off, so the utility of this tool even to non-security professionals can’t really be overstated.

You should always select the right tool for the job and consider the overall objectives you'd like to accomplish. Nmap is a quick and easy tool to find open ports, ZAP or Burp Suite are excellent at analyzing websites or applications in production, and AWS Inspector can help with AWS-specific resources. All these tools mentioned are beneficial in analyzing your cloud attack surface and where you might be vulnerable. Once you identify vulnerabilities, vulnerability management takes over to remediate them, but now you are more aware of your environment. Especially in a highly agile world, vulnerabilities can make their way through to production, but the quicker you identify and resolve them, the better.

For better web vulnerability testing, using commercial tools like Acunetix or Netsparker can increase the accuracy of the results. They have more features and generate detailed reports to identify vulnerabilities and threats- based on security researchers' information. Investing in these tools is wise for any organization with many applications to scan and limited resources to remediate + they can easily integrate them into their SDLC. Overall the challenge in this space is the false positive rate that unfortunately open-source tools cannot keep up with.

CloudCheckr and CloudSploit are tools designed to monitor and manage cloud configurations, helping detect potential risks in AWS environments. For Azure, Microsoft offers Azure Security Center, providing advanced threat protection across all Azure services. Google Cloud Platform users might utilise Google Cloud Security Command Center to identify misconfigurations and vulnerabilities. CloudPassage Halo is a security automation platform that provides comprehensive server security, including cloud environments. Dome9 Arc offers multi-cloud security, visualising and assessing the security posture of AWS, Azure, and GCP. Using these tools, alongside routine checks and updates, ensures a robust security posture for cloud environments.

Adhering to best practices in cloud security testing—such as clearly defining scope and objectives, securing permission from asset owners, and meticulously documenting findings—ensures efficacy and adherence to ethical and legal norms. These measures streamline the focus and effort and facilitate transparent communication regarding risk and impacts of identified vulnerabilities. Employing suitable techniques and tools, in alignment with these practices, enables pinpointing and mitigating vulnerabilities, thereby safeguarding your data and systems in the cloud and fortifying your overall cloud security posture against potential compromises.

Cloud platforms such as AWS and Azure lend themselves to traditional security methodologies and testing within your own tenant. Large SaaS platforms and suites often do not, and your ability to test is also limited by contractual obligations and certain timing windows. Red teams with novel techniques and some newer technologies that use APIs and other hooks into these providers can help bridge the gap here.
