What are the challenges of maintaining current resources in school libraries?

O mundo está mudando constantemente, a tecnologia n?o para, mas é um esfor?o quase sobre-humano fazer nossos superiores que n?o s?o da área entenderem a real importancia de uma biblioteca escolar na vida do aluno, n?o existe or?amento para biblioteca escolar e quando pedimos para comprar alguma coisa a fim de manter a biblioteca atualizada, quase sempre é negado, você faz pesquisas or?amentárias, você entrega tudo mastigado com pelo menos três op??es de compras, explica qual a importancia daquela aquisi??o, entrega para o setor responsável, espera a resposta e quando chega: negada. Simples assim.

Lack of money for new books is a big problem. Many schools feel unable to invest in libraries on an annual basis so stock is not being kept up to date. For many primary schools the basics of books is hard to afford let alone library software or other media.

Os cortes or?amentários, além de dificultar o desenvolvimento das cole??es, dificulta a aprendizagem tecnológica das pessoas, uma vez que nem só de livros é feita uma biblioteca atual. isto impacta também na contrata??o de m?o de obra adequada para este local.

Acredito que a mudan?a digital tem a ver com a falta de investimento nas bibliotecas, pois n?o adianta um profissional que tenha competência para aplica??o de atividades pertinentes para a inclus?o digital, mas n?o ter equipamentos para trabalhar essas atividades.

The "digital shift" is not a reality on the ground. Most of the students would still prefer a physical book over an e-book and these are students of "Gen Z" and "Gen Alpha." In this regard I see a disconnect with what the management wants and what the students need.

Working in an international school in South East Asia I often find it very difficult to find books that reflect the cultural diversity of the school community. We need to support authors who are writing from, in and about different countries and experiences.

I have an ongoing program of asking the students, faculty, and staff of the school for book recommendations, which in turn form a priority list for my acquisitions. While we have library standards to meet, it does not help the library meet the needs of its community if the collection remains unused. While we cannot discount the curricular needs of our school library, we must be able to adequately provide for the instructional and recreational needs of our clients. This is a way of encouraging them to explore the more academic uses of the library.

There needs to be a constant cycle of weeding old/damaged/out of date books, assessing where the gaps are for your school community, and then buying new books to fill those gaps. It always surprises me how resistant so many stakeholders are when we have to get rid of books, which is why it is important to establish weeding policies - even if we actually are just using our professional judgement!

It is important to understand the wider picture as far as information literacy is concerned. It can't be a stand-alone skill but needs to be integrated into the curriculum. Many teachers have projects; through this, we can support and teach students information literacy. Using tools such as FOSIL (Framework Of Skills for Inquiry Learning) we can keep up to date. The community of teachers, academics and librarians are constantly sharing new ideas and resources they have created.

Reiteramos que o processo de ensino nas escolas primárias e secundárias deve ser assegurado na perspectiva da literacia informacional. Para tanto, as a??es e respectivas fun??es educativas dos professores e bibliotecários responsáveis pelos objetivos alcan?ados nas dimens?es expressas dever?o ser explicitadas no programa de ensino da escola. Nesse contexto, s?o necessárias medidas institucionais para desenvolver programas e projetos que visem promover o processo de alfabetiza??o informacional nas escolas brasileiras, especialmente em termos de competências informacionais no nível de forma??o continuada de educadores e bibliotecários.

School librarians need a strategic and development plan that links to their school's aims and objectives. This will help school librarians not only know what their goals are but also the schools. School librarians do not work in a silo and as such need to be aware of what is going on around them to make an impact on student's lives and support teaching and learning and break down some of those barriers.

School librarians need to be recognised at head of department level in order for this to happen effectively. Being aware of curriculum needs and integrated into the system

Being included in school-wide meetings, consultations and reviews is really helpful to understanding the broader picture within the organisation and how the library can contribute to their targets. I found that being involved in the accreditation/inspection process was a great way to expand my knowledge of the wider organisational context, as well as being able to provide my professional insight and highlight how the library was contributing to the school development plans. Of course, I was lucky to have a very supportive Head of School who encouraged me to be involved in this way - sadly, I know from experience, that is rarely the case. But I would encourage librarians to find a way in if at all possible!
