What challenges do you face when using NLP for machine translation?

NLP for machine translation encounters challenges like handling ambiguity, idiomatic expressions, and context preservation. Domain-specific jargon and cultural nuances also pose hurdles. Additionally, resource-intensive training and lack of parallel data for low-resource languages hinder accuracy. Overcoming these challenges requires robust models, extensive data, and continuous refinement to ensure accurate and culturally sensitive translations.

Challenges I faced in NLP for machine translation include maintaining context, handling idiomatic expressions, resolving ambiguity, addressing syntactic and semantic differences, managing rare or unseen words, and dealing with language-specific nuances and cultural references. Additionally, preserving fluency, coherence, and naturalness pose significant hurdles, as does adapting to diverse language pairs and domains while ensuring efficiency and scalability.

The following factors affect the data quality in machine translation 1)Language morphology- -We may find more spelling variations in morphological rich language. - In morphological rich language, multiple words are combined together, which effects the word alignment in parallel corpus. 2)Dialect variations- The data quality is also effected by the use of local dialect in the language. 3)Word sense disambiguation(WSD)- Sometimes one word can have multiple meanings. So, it creates difficulty in aligning the source word with the target word. 4) Ambiguity- Needs to handle structural and semantic ambiguity 5)Noise- Language can contain various noise elements like idioms, irony, spelling mistakes etc.

Navigating the linguistic labyrinth, NLP for machine translation faces: 1. Ambiguity abyss: Words with multiple meanings leading to translation errors. 2. The language can be divided into 6 categories based on the subject, object and verb order in the language. Among them, 3 categories are most popular Subject-Object-Verb(SOV) language -Indian languages Subject-Verb-Object(SVO) language- English & European lang VSO language- Hebrew, Arabic Statistical translation faces difficulty in translating the language from one language family to another language family. We need to perform long distance reordering for translation between different families of language. Syntax based translation is used for capturing word order. 2)Logographic language- Chinese, Japanese, and Korean have uses logograph for writing. These language needs different tokenizer and other NLP processes.

As any native speaker of the language rues (rightfully) that the beauty of the language is lost in translation, it is perhaps the most important aspect of a translation. I think that translators are able to rightly manage tense and gender but they are not able to capture the essence of the conversation. What might be considered appropriate in one dialect may be considered rude in another.

A fascinating technical nuance in the realm of evaluation metrics for machine translation (MT) and natural language processing (NLP) is the concept of "chrF" (character n-gram F-score), which addresses some limitations of more traditional metrics like BLEU and METEOR. Unlike BLEU, which primarily focuses on the precision of word n-grams between the machine-generated text and a set of reference translations, chrF evaluates the translation quality at the character level, considering both precision and recall of character n-grams.

The standard metrics like BLEU are good for a starting point and at least ensure that useless translations are identified early on although they cannot differentiate between different qualities of translation. Unless we have evals which can give scores on multiple dimensions we cannot be sure of the quality of translations.

One area where we need much more work in translations is in dialogues. Dialogues, as we all can easily understand, are the toughest nuts to crack. Not only are they made up of incomplete sentences, they also use words from other languages and the continuous play of words going back and forth with those odd silences are very difficult to translate. I think that this is an area which still requires a lot of work.
