They're a function of the organization, for instance sometimes developers don't directly report to product managers. - Some senior PMs are called to 'transform' an ailing business, but the people that need transformation have no relevant expertise in this field, setting up the product leader to fail. - Titles are a bit of a mess : a director at one company can manage 300 talents, while a director or VP at another is mostly an IC. Against this background, it is very important to be confident about your strengths, what makes you unique, what interests you, and target exciting companies, prepare, and be ready to say no!
