What challenges do new library professionals face in career development?

Consider volunteering at libraries. Doing unpaid volunteer work will give you a preference when they are hiring, and it'd also give you a chance to see if libraries are what you choose for a career.

Don't underestimate the power of social media and mailing lists to find a suitable post. Lots of libraries do not have the kind of money to advertise their posts widely so prefer to use existing infrastructure wherever possible. So, if you have an eye on a particular service follow them directly and if you are in the UK have a look at the JISC mailing lists - anyone can sign up to those. Also do not be afraid to send cold emails, especially if you have a strong CV. Lots of places keep them on file and will reach out and invite an application if a suitable position arises. Boldness and a bit of cheek wins.

One thing I found really helpful is to set myself up with an RSS reader app (like Inoreader, Feedly, or NewsBlur), which I now check every Thursday morning. They let you subscribe directly to library journals and blogs that point to further helpful reading and training and the kicker is that that is the only thing you are getting. No need to trawl through a lot of social media noise or check 15 different websites. Just relevant articles and academic conversations. Lots of these RSS readers now also have in-depth tools to curate your experience, especially if you are ready to invest a few quid - which is also my final bit of advice. What you learn and store in your brain cannot be taken from you and is therefore always worth the money.

Networking with other librarians through social media and linkedin helps with keeping current with the library skill set. Also consider attending relevant workshops and conferences. In case funding is an issue, check into free e-resources and youtube channels that teach skills for free.

Don't be upset with doing the smaller tasks. Some libraries are headed by non-librarians and it's hard to deal with them, but it's necessary to stay patient and professional throughout the journey, and to pitch proposals to build and win your case.

Don't be afraid to visit other libraries or to meet with library directors. Go for it, you'll always learn something new that might change the way you view things.

Some libraries offer a clear career path and others don't. If they don't, keep doing your job and consider applying elsewhere, because growth is very important.

I wish I could tell you otherwise but career development, especially as an early career LIS professional, is a stony road. The sector is and has been going through hard times since at least 2008 and time has become a luxury for everyone, so a lot of your early career development will rely on you to stay hungry and to seek out opportunities for yourself. Be ready to show your value at every turn and find your own path. Only the very few lucky ones, get one shown to them.

As a school librarian, my main job is to help students discover the joy of reading and learning. One of the challenges for new librarians is staying updated with technology because libraries are becoming more digital. Also, explaining why libraries are still important in today's world and managing resources with limited money can be tough. However, being a librarian is rewarding because I get to see students grow their love for books and learning. With some effort and learning, new librarians can overcome these challenges and do a great job.
