What are the career paths and opportunities for advancement in Public Administration fundraising?

I have learned that in the fundraising space in particular, it is a combination of skills. I, myself, had no fundraising background per se, but I had a good deal of background in advocacy - both professions require ability to engage partners and potential partners in conversation and maintain that relationship over time. It is rare you can go into a meeting with a donor or funder and walk out with a check This is long-term relationship building whether your funds are coming from an individual donor, a legacy giver, a government or other funder.

Since I also had a career in finance concurrent with when we started our foundation, I merged my personal , professional and philanthropic life into one. I was always on 24/7. When pursuing business as a salesmen , I always asked for the order for our foundation as well . Sometimes I wouldn’t win the business but would still receive a contribution for our foundation . Then the more you get to know people at some point your foundation becomes personally important to them. I’ve even had prospects become donors , then friends then ultimately I forged a professional relationship . This is so gratifying because when it becomes personal for someone else you have succeeded in expanding your foot with people who will make a difference.

I've discovered that whether you're engaging donors or writing grant proposals, the skill of crafting a compelling story is invaluable in the realm of fundraising. Storytelling is the ultimate measure of engagement.

The career paths include financial management, strategy and policy analysis, and marketing. To succeed as a fundraiser, you need to be effective in communication, analytical reasoning, strategic thinking, and networking. Human relations is a vital aspect of fundraising that requires communication and connectivity. Developing skills in this area will definitely enhance your capacity to deliver the desired results in this regard.

My experience as Fundraiser, in addition to strong interpersonal communication skills, especially in aid management, the organization implements systems and standard operating procedures in accordance with state rules, organizational values and principles. Based on this, the roles, functions and responsibilities are carried out by people who have competence and expertise. From the planning process, writing proposals and budgets, evaluation and monitoring, to accountability audited by independent bodies. Good governance is a standard that cannot be negotiated, because this is part of maintaining trust with donors. Every year we send governance reports, both narrative reports, financial statements and auditor reports to our donors.

To succeed in today's fundraising landscape, equip your team with these key attributes: Donor-centric Storytelling: A deep understanding of donor motivations and aspirations is essential for crafting compelling narratives that resonate with their values to create powerful connections that drive meaningful contributions. The organization where I work, for fundraising, we do not have formal education or special certificates. All from different backgrounds, law, education, and accountants. However, in an effort to increase knowledge, be active in networking activities of other organizations to understand multi-issues, actively discuss with beneficiary groups and stakeholders so that we can record the level of needs that must be targeted in fundraising work. We can do skills and competencies related to fundraising by participating in various trainings both in person and online. Training on various topics related to fundraising with various platforms, writing proposals, and establishing relationships with multi-stakeholders in improving skills and competencies.

In my experience, building a network is crucial for fundraising career development. It opens doors to new opportunities, knowledge, and support from peers and mentors.

From Fundraising activities, it has undeniably had a positive impact on my career journey. Given the trust to lead projects at the regional and national levels. My ability to communicate with various stakeholders both in the government and in the private sector has led me to become an actor to organize many companies and multi-organizations in hearing meetings with member legislatures to discuss and decide on a policy that will have a lot of impact on social programs in the community. From the fundraising position, I finally became a program manager and deputy director. In this position, it does not mean that fundraising activities have stopped, but have increased to various regions in various provinces and on a national scale.
