When I started in hospitality, I had a picture in my head of what I wanted my restaurants to be, a local neighborhood restaurant with a cool vibe with superior food and superior service at a reasonable price. We would go out of our way to make people feel welcome, really get to know them and their family. I had been quoted as saying that "A restaurant is more than just good food and service, It’s how you feel when you walk out the door". We would buy a dessert for a birthday or send an appetizer if our regulars had guests in from out of town. I translate that same mantra of VALUE & SERVICE to my consulting and my group coaching. If you go out of your way, above and beyond you turn clients into superfans. They WANT to recommend you.

2 Ask for referrals

The second step is to ask for referrals from your customers, partners, and contacts. Don't be shy or passive about it. You can create a referral program that rewards them for bringing new business to you, or simply ask them to share your contact information with their friends, family, or colleagues who might need your help. Referrals are great with some of the highest conversion rates in sales and marketing in my industry (life insurance sales). This is because a client who has usually used and enjoyed the product or service and will be excited to get their network on board. My experience has been that a client will also do a pre-sale on your behalf to their network thereby unofficially guaranteeing the service. By the time someone goes in for the actual pitch there is already a baseline of trust and rapport to build on.

The third step is to build relationships with your potential and existing customers, partners, and contacts. You want to be seen as a trusted advisor, not just a seller. You can do this by providing useful information, tips, and advice, sharing your expertise and insights, and engaging with them on social media, email, or phone. Let your actions sell for you. If you join groups where your ideal client hangs out and start to offer value there, they will notice you. They are watching. They might not interact and they might not respond to your post, but they are watching. Keep adding value there As for you existing customers/clients; Get to know your them. Know their struggles, their interests. What do they like? What inspires them? I will often send snippets of an article I read that I think my client will be interested in. That helps to build deeper connections and lets them know that I listen and I care.

Your yeses should mean Yes. You should always deliver on promises, or if you cannot you need to be upfront, honest and transparent about why and then immediately set out to correct the situation. Be sure to follow up promptly and send a thank you. A phone call or an email is mandatory but if you have their address, following up with a handwritten thank you goes far.
