Let's cut the crap. If you're turning to InDesign for interactive web content, you're barking up the wrong digital tree. It's like bringing a butter knife to a gunfight. Sure, InDesign is the bee's knees for print design, but when it comes to web content, it's about as effective as a screen door on a submarine. You want tools that are built for the job, not just pretending to be.

InDesign allows to create engaging image overlays using the "Multi-State Objects" feature; and it enables you to design a series of states for an object, like an image, and transition between them. This is particularly useful for before-and-after graphics.

I've used InDesign for web content. I agree mostly with the premise here, with the caveat that InDesign on its own is not a website builder--it has no CMS capability nor can it connect to a database, etc. What you can make is interactive experiences that can be viewed with a Web browser. So if you are an InDesign power user and it's a quiz, a dashboard, a video slideshow or other interactive content that you are building then InDesign is a great choice. If you don't know InDesign I'm not sure I would learn it just for the interactive features. Those who are InDesign pros—who know how incredibly powerful the app is for layout and design—owe it to themselves to at least try the interactive features using Publish Online

Since Flash died several years ago, SWF isn't an option. There are currently two viable options for adding animation to web content: Publish Online, or the In5 plugin. I'd also add here that it's very easy to apply motion paths to your animations to add some variety to how you bring on your design elements.

Buttons may also control animations on a page, pausing or reversing them in addition to starting and stopping. The EPUB Interactivity Preview is handy and fast, but increasingly is not a perfect reflection of what is actually possible on export to HTML.

Whilst services like issuu exist to translate interactive PDFs to a decent web UX (and they do a good job) there are relatively simple ways to translate your print to digital which are much more mobile friendly and will contribute more to your SEO. Repurposing your content for the relevant platform is always the better option for a multitude of reasons.
