What are the best ways to test code for scalability?

When I was looking after an e-commerce website, I tested how well it could handle a lot of unexpected visitors. I used a bot to send fake requests to the site to see how it coped. This helped me figure out the maximum number of visitors the site could handle before it started having problems. Since the website was hosted on AWS, I was able to implement horizontal scaling to handle the unexpected increase in user visits.

Once at work, we need to measure the limit of simultaneous requests that an API could process, precisely for possible promotion. We created Trigger that triggered requests evaluating the number of users affected by a VM and thus we can validate how many simultaneous users can use it. This way we can identify bottlenecks based on metrics and use a load balancer to address possible problems. So we consider evaluating and dealing with possible problems and scaling the “hardware” level according to the breaking point. Today we use the AWS architecture, which provides us with services that meet all of our structures.

Load testing simulates the real-world load on a system to analyze its performance under stress. This is carried out to ensure consistent system performance for both, normal and extreme load conditions. Its goal is to identify bottlenecks by simulating different scenarios like increase in the number of concurrent users, heavy network traffic, incremental requests and so on. Load testing helps assess scalability by anticipating the system’s ability to handle growing systems demands as users and transactions increase. It will give you insights at the point in which system performance goes off track and rectify the same before it becomes a major issue in user experience.

Begin by thoroughly reviewing your application's architecture, cataloging each technology component utilized. This includes everything from APIs and frameworks to libraries and services. For each of these components, identify their strengths, such as performance efficiency or scalability, and their weaknesses, such as potential for latency or resource consumption. Armed with this comprehensive overview, focus your attention on the areas most susceptible to stress. This targeted approach in your stress testing will allow you to efficiently determine which parts of your application are robust and which are vulnerable under high load conditions.

In my work, the stack we use has been JAVA – SpringBoot Framework, and it contains some libraries that help us monitor and manage our Application and generate analyzes on its operation, which can be a complicated task. So we use the “Spring Boot Actuator”, which monitors our application by collecting metrics over time and thus brings real-time information to the team, helping to understand the best path to take. In addition to included AWS services, which provide me with other analysis points using metrics from CloudWatch, CloudWatch Logs, Kinesis Data Firehose and AWS X-Ray.

Code review is evaluating written code to ensure its quality, scalability, and adherence to established standards. Some of its benefits are: 1. Performance considerations: It enables you to assess the implications of code changes with by evaluating if proposed changes introduce bottlenecks to scalability. 2. Resource optimization: Code reviews enable you to ensure that your application can run at scale without being resource intensive. Eg, look for how your code handles memory, CPU, & other resources. 3. Concurrency: Ensuring scalability needs you to check your code's ability to manage concurrent users. Code reviews give you the opportunity to check for adequate concurrency& parallelism strategies in distributed computing environments.

Based on my experience, code reviews and refactoring contribute to the following: - Reducing the number of bugs and issues. - Maintaining readable and high-quality code. - Facilitating the scalability of the system. - Enhancing team collaboration and knowledge sharing. - Improving overall software design and architecture. - Improving performance and system optimizations.

Unit testing is very important and should be done right after building each part of the software. It helps find and fix errors, bugs, and security issues in these parts early on, which saves money in the long run. After unit testing, integration testing is necessary. This is done once all the individual parts are put together, to make sure they work well as a whole system.

Today, unit testing is very important, as we can individually validate whether that functionality is capable of working on its own, in addition to validating whether the process is working quickly, consistently and whether the results are valid. This helps us reduce errors, the system's lifetime and guarantees greater reliability of the code so that future developers can take on their stories and tasks.

When considering code scalability, it's crucial to recognize that it's not solely about handling increased load but also about maintaining or improving performance under that load. Scalability testing should be an iterative process, integrated into the development lifecycle. This ensures that scalability considerations are addressed continuously, rather than as an afterthought. Additionally, leveraging cloud-based services for scalability testing can provide a more realistic environment and flexible resources. Remember, scalability is not just a technical challenge; it also involves proper planning and architecture decisions.

Consider capacity planning, security testing, cloud testing, efficient garbage collections, compatibility, third-party API/ system integrations, and Performance testing. Test applications when third-party APIs or external dependencies are under the increased load. Check performance in non-ideal conditions. Following basic principles of testing across the entire Integrated system will help you identify bottlenecks and give clarity on code refactoring.
