What are the best ways to show genuine interest in someone during a conversation?

My 2 cents: 1. Maintain eye contact 2. Be polite, respectful and courteous 3. Ask open ended questions 4. The other person should feel comfortable in your company 5. Be humorous but at the same time measure/ filter the content of your conversation. 6. Make sure that you add value to the other person by making the experience knowledgeable and enjoyable 7. End the conversation on a positive note 8. Avoid been judgmental or biased. Present yourself as a lifelong learner who has a growth mindset

Maintain eye contact. Ensure that your body language is great. Show respect and maintain that respect throughout the conversation. Ask open ended questions. Show genuine interest in the person and make them feel good. Shake hands ?? when you are done and part on a friendly note.

Asking an open ended question can possibly lead to other real powerful questions that can make a connection with the person .

To convey a sincere interest in someone during conversation we should not make them feel that we are not listening them properly. We should maintain the eye contact and should appreciate them and respect there opinions. We can share our perspective about the same topic which are they talking about and always ask for feedback.

In my experience, it is about asking questions. I find people fascinating - where they have been, what they do, how they came to be, and what they see for themselves in the future. If you are expecting an important phone call or a distraction of some sort, use the opportunity up front to inform the person that this is to be expected at some point. If you aren't expecting anything, don't react to notifications on your watch or phone, maintain eye contact and interest and let your peripheral catch the notification until you have a natural gap to check for an emergency (if the person has finished talking).

Yes avoid distractions as much as possible since I work in an open style office setting I try to make sure other people's activities don't interfere with our interaction or interview.

Do not break the conversation when they’re talking, allow them to speak even when you know what they’re going to say. 3. Ask genuine questions related to the conversation. 4. Listen again. 5. Share relatable stories if necessary. Try not to be the main character, don’t share your own worse experience when someone is sharing theirs unless it’s necessary, it’s not a competition of who’s had it worse. 6. Follow up. After the conversation, check on them to know how they’re faring, updates or ask questions from previous conversations, this shows you care & truly listened. Be empathetic!

You have to be genuinely interested. So I believe the question for this post is wrong: it's not about showing that you are interested (when you are not), it's about being interested. The key question is: "Can you switch on your curiosity?" The experiment: take someone who has a different interest or opinion than you? Now: Can you put yourself in a mindset of unlimited curiosity? If so: great! No need to get distracted by anything else (keeping eye contact, nodding, summarising). When you're interested, you are and the other person will feel it! If you don't succeed? Try harder and develop your curiosity muscle. Because nodding, summarising and eye contact will feel artificial and won't help. Don't fake being CURIOUS! Be CURIOUS!
