What are the best ways to reduce your event's carbon footprint through budgeting?

Green venues are great, however, I personally view this of lower priority. Primarily, it is more important to align attendees towards the carbon goals you are trying to achieve.

Virtual events are fantastic, however, they’re becoming inherently 2D. There is some fantastic work being done by companies such as Jugo & Zoom to make these spaces more immersive.

In my opinion, the best option to reduce your event carbon footprint is simply to hold it online using remote recording and digital panelists recording to animate the debates. In this way, you can achieve Net Zero Meeting/Event. It was tested during Covid and it functioned very well in the hotel industry. Therefore smaller events can definitely make it happen with some creative practice.

Actually I can share my experience many years when I used to spend time time at my grand mother during summer vacation. It was in the seventies at the countryside we would farm all vegetables from the garden, get the milk and cheese from cows and goats. We eat the meat from poultry, fish from rivers and collect mushrooms from the forest. Unfortunately, it all disappeared as people moved from the country side to the big cities and lost all the good practices.

An example of recycling food waste is very well known is composting. However I wish to share other potential solutions that are also great and can apply to city hotel. It is a process that liquify the food waste then boils at high temperature to obtain bio-gas which is used to create electricity. This principle could be used to power the entire back of the house of a 300 rooms hotel.

Measuring and offset is often only viewed in the traditional way by venues. Considering the footprint of attendees is by far the largest & most impactful position to hold.

In my experience, most hotels and resorts are focused on the basic carbon footprint contained in Scope 1and 2. However, Scope 3 measure and evaluate indirect carbon emissions and biodiversity impact which represents up to 85% of the harmful impact caused to the environment and nature. By giving a value to the CO2 per Ton, we can evaluate the cost of one night stay at any location in the world and contribute back to nature. That’s the real concept of Net Zero carbon footprint.
