Developing leadership skills takes time and practice. In my experience, I have constantly reminded myself of who I am, where I am, and why I am doing what I am doing. This is called self-awareness. It has helped me understand my own strengths, weaknesses, and motivations. It reminds me every time I am in a situation. It has allowed me to identify areas where I need to improve and work on building my emotional intelligence.

E.g. to stakeholders you might focus on some business aspect, for programmers, you might focus on the technical backend. Try to make your communication useful and understandable to the audience.

Joining small volunteer organisations can be a great way to develop leadership, especially one where you have to organise and work with others in a team. Another possibility is to attend events, workshops, especially local community events, and learn from the active communities there. The key with leadership is that leadership isn't just about demonstrating skills, it's about being able to weave those skills, those achievements, those lessons into stories and other forms of empowerment

In my opinion, when you are learning from others, it is important to be open to feedback and to be willing to step outside of your comfort zone. It is also important to find people who you admire and respect, and who can help you to grow as a leader.

In my career, I've benefited greatly from pair programming with more experienced developers, which allows for real-time feedback and knowledge transfer. Additionally, I've participated in cross-functional team projects that provided exposure to different leadership styles and problem-solving approaches. Attending tech conferences and contributing to open source projects also presents ample opportunities to observe and adopt best practices from seasoned leaders in the field.

Just like in any grand adventure, it pays to have a guild—mentors who have navigated the treacherous bugs, colleagues who share their maps to buried treasure (also known as shrewd shortcuts and elegant solutions), and even those wise sages at conferences who regale you with tales of codes past.

Leadership role does not mean you have completely became the teacher or mentor. In my experience I have seen leaders more focussed on learning and become better students everyday.

Coding maestros aren't just solo artists; they're conductors of a coding orchestra. Striking the right chord means not hogging all the instruments. Delegate! Hand over the trumpet or the timpani to the ones who can play them best. It's about giving your code companions the sheet music (clear tasks) and the freedom to riff a little (autonomy). By empowering your band of developers, you're not just doling out tasks, you're building a trust trusty fortress and boosting the whole team's XP (experience points). Each one gets to level up, from debugging drummers to system architect soloists.

A simple and effective way to delegate and empower is to create a schedule for each team member to temporarily play a leadership role. An example is a practice within agile teams, whereby each team member is allowed to play the role of the facilitator according to a schedule. In order to eliminate lack of confidence, a simplified outline or a concise structure of the process should have been documented and made available prior to the handling. Also walkthroughs should have been conducted as often as necessary. This thereby ensures that each member is progressively familiarized with the process, and confident enough to participate in the elevated role. Following this, more privileges can be extended while supervision is reduced.

As a leader, I always encourage my team to think out of the box and look beyond what is obvious to find the root cause of a problem, explore various options, bring in divergent thinking, weigh in the options and then choose the one that is most innovative yet least expensive. One of the most important points is that a well-rounded programmer is not only proficient in coding. They also possess a keen awareness of the business context. This ensures that technical solutions are not just viable from a programming perspective but also align with the larger goals of the project and the market it serves.

One point that I would like to highlight is that leadership requires a different set of skills than that of a great software engineer. Many great software engineers fail to do the next step towards leadership because they do not realize this truth. So, I believe that the first key element that distinguishes the software engineers that succeed in leadership roles compare to those who do not is the willingness to take a step away from code and invest time on other skills (e.g., communication, listening, providing feedback, empowering people, mentoring, etc.).

When delivering presentations, try to constantly bring it back to the core purpose. While it is important at points to delve into the technical details if necessary, for most, they are concerned about the vision of your work, of your team's project. Sticking to the core purpose of why some project is important is a great way to demonstrate the leadership of considering a project from multiple viewpoints.

There is a difference between "leading the tech" and "leading the team". Merely making decisions on the technology, or becoming indispensable as the go-to rescuer in solving problems with the code or technical tools does not fully define a leader. Leading people involves helping them to confidently and progressively traverse their pathway to success. Such leader would prioritize access to effective training and helpful guidance. He makes it a goal to provide support in time management, dealing with burnout, and motivational assurance. He offers his experience as a leverage for his team members without fear of becoming dispensable. This will continually foster their confidence and heighten their eagerness to accept more challenging tasks.

A critical skill often missing among tech leads, to my regret, is coaching. Effective coaching demands mindfulness, patience, and a sincere investment in the coachee's success — qualities that are frequently absent in senior leadership. Coaching is a skill that can be developed; it's not inherently innate and necessitates carving out time from the daily grind to hone and practice. The results of effective coaching, however, can be remarkable.
