One thing I've found most helpful during my science communication journey is to view presentations as a conversation, rather than just simply delivering information. Don't be afraid of the Q/A section - it's so important to understand what your audience wants from you, and you may be surprised what you can learn from them! I've seen my research from a whole new perspective after taking questions from public audiences! Secondly, be open and honest about the limitations of your work - no one knows absolutely everything, and no one is expecting you to either!

For example, if you’re at a university, send a pitch to your campus newspaper or alumni magazine. Yes, the circulation is low, but if you’re just starting out, that’s how this works: Publish good articles in smaller publications, collect a portfolio of these, and then reach out to more prominent institutions. In this way, you can test the waters, get your name out there, and develop skills, all without really committing to a new full-time career in science.
