1 Update your online presence

Before you reach out to anyone, make sure your online presence reflects your professional goals and achievements. Update your LinkedIn profile , portfolio, resume, and any other relevant platforms with your latest education, skills, projects, and accomplishments. Use keywords that match your industry and target roles, and highlight your unique value proposition. Also, check your privacy settings and remove any inappropriate or irrelevant content from your social media accounts.

When I talk to my coaching clients, mentees, or students about their online presence, I ask them to Google their names. Why? As Aristotle said, "Self-awareness is the beginning of all wisdom." When you audit your current online present, you get to know your starting point. This means: - you can tell how you're already showing up - if you are showing up (some people are like ghosts online) - where to improve what you see The good news is that you can change the results you see. How? - By ensuring your LinkedIn profile speaks to your strengths, values, and unique contributions. - Showcases your work and highlights relevant at-work and out-of-work experiences.

2 Join relevant communities

One of the best ways to network as a recent graduate is to join online and offline communities that are relevant to your field, interests, and aspirations. For example, you can join industry associations, alumni groups, professional networks, online forums, webinars, podcasts, newsletters, and blogs. In today's world, there is literally a community of people congregating around a specific topic whether it is here on LinkedIn or other platforms across the internet. 3 Reach out to your existing contacts

Another effective way to network as a recent graduate is to leverage your existing contacts, such as your professors, classmates, colleagues, friends, family, and mentors. Be intentional with how and who you approach. Utilizing a curious mindset and asking questions about the other person is extremely valuable. I suggest questions that help understand the other person's role, skills, and career path. Some examples are: What do you enjoy most about your work? How did you find the company you currently work for? Was there a person who helped you in your career? If you could suggest a skill to work on to get into this field, what would it be?

Making the transition from an educational institute to a workplace can be daunting. Networks can help make this journey smoother. However, be clear about your networking goals. Are you trying to connect with someone to get immediate mileage in your career - a job change or a promotion? There's nothing wrong once in a while to lean into your network for career advancement but be careful of the patterns that are emerging.
