One of the most important aspect of logging metric is often - How long do you want to store the logs? Any software that is reasonably significant will generate logs in the gigabytes, and after a few months, it is not uncommon for the log data to reach TBs. This will ultimately lead to the maintenance of the logging infrastructure becoming an expensive endeavour. Therefore, it's imperative that we specify how long we wish to keep these logs. A metric in days between 1 and 365 can be used. Additionally, this needs to be adjusted according to the kind of product—internal, external, high or low usage, etc.

After the logging infra is ready, utmost care should be taken to ensure that logging of customer sensitive data rather PII ( Personally Identifiable Information ) like name, bank details etc is not logged. Some measures to help with this are - 1. Frequent audits of the logs by the team 2. Highlight any sensitive logs during the PR review. 3. Write scripts which automate the process of scanning the format for sensitive customer data
