What are the best ways to mentor a junior programmer?

Setting expectations during initial 1:1's is crucial to build long-term mentor-mentee relationships. Few things to consider - 1. Don't come off as someone who is superior or unapproachable. This is because from the very onset, the mentee wouldn't look up to you and more importantly, your behavior would put a negative impression on the entire team. 2. Showcase what and how you approach daily problem sets. If not anything else, show them your work space setup. This in turn, builds up the mentees' confidence and the mindest of inclusion kicks in. 3. Set boundaries - Clearly define what you expect out of the mentees before they reach out to you. This in turn, would hold both parties accountable before every meet up.

Teaching "how to learn" is very underappreciated. The focus should be on to build strong fundamentals, give examples from professional experiences, and encourage them to explore.

Being a mentor is not about just giving them tasks and fix their errors, in my opinion, the most important thing a to show them how should think about the problems, never should underestimate them because they are newbie, share even your problems with them, a junior needs to feel that he/she is worthy, it could speed-up their adaptability and learning procces. When it comes to teaching new thing, provide the key points, talk about them but let the investigate by themself. After all, try to be friendly, let them know you are always there for them.

Things that I found helpful. 1. Sometimes the junior person might not know what they are good at ( probably because they are hooked to things they are not so good at) -> Be the extra pair of eyes to help them acknowledge it. 2. No matter how often you say you are ready to help, some of them might hesitate to ask. Break the ice. 3. Sharing the expectations set on the mentee -> so they know what their goal should be, collaborate in setting the goal, and understand how they process the goals set, so the mentor can also access where and how she/he can support better.

No doubt! setting up goals and expectations is very important, one thing I have found useful is tracking down the progress toward the goal each day, this helps to achieve the target in the planned time frame and the continuous learning of the concepts and practicing them regularly build up a better understanding and practical experience.

Give them problems on daily basis and focus the things they tried instead if they were able to solve them or not. If they were able to solve it ask follow up questions which will help them improve their fundamentals and things they missed.

Before providing any suggestions, listen to their problems first. Ask them if they can come up with any solutions to the problem. Providing guidance doesn't mean that you jump right into their problems and start solving them. Give them enough time to ensure that they learn by doing it themselves rather than following you blindly.

Assign tasks that challenge and expand their skill set. Give them opportunities to work on different aspects of a project to gain exposure to various technologies and methodologies.

It's an iterative and continuous process. First we need to verbally communicate the over all plan for task execution, We need to clear any confusion which they have. Also we need to jointly summarize the plan. Secondly we allow them to present the solution and nudge them toward optimized version of the solution. It is done by asking question which makes mentees realize the loophole in their solution as well as we need to give them hints and encourage them to do their own analysis. Once the task is completed we also need to encourage the mentees to find if any auxiliary tasks are pending for example code comments, documentation etc. Mentor should make mentee realize the importance and criticality of these activities.

A mentor should not only focus on the right solution. Right approach to the solution is also important. Instead of providing the solution, help the mentees to visualize the problem and share possible solutions. Help them navigate to the right solution and intervene only when it’s an absolute necessity.

Challenges are the best way to learn a new concept as they increase the want to solve a problem and come up with a solution as early as possible, it also increases the satisfaction level and confidence of a mentee. I feel mentors can break down a larger problem into smaller requirements and share them with the mentee which can be treated as a task and solving them will result in continuous learning and will promote growth in confidence and independence.

Empower junior devs through challenges: ??Give them tasks that stretch their skills, but aren't overwhelming. ??Encourage them to seek feedback and share their work. ??Watch them grow with confidence and independence.

Promote a problem-solving mindset. Encourage the junior programmer to think critically, debug independently, and search for solutions. Offer guidance when needed, but also allow them to learn through trial and error.

The most important thing to challenging them is to encourage them and let them know that you trust them with it. Setting their goals beyond their current skills also means they are progressing, which boosts their confidence.

Also, by asking questions on if there are other different ways of doing the current task and challenging them to find the best way would help them improve as it requires lot of research and would increase the knowledge on topic

Make sure that when mentoring your fellow mentee, that they are aware that they can contact you at any time if they need help or assistance in any way. emphasize that you will respect any situation they are currently in and will not talk about anything that is upsetting to them, ensure that you maintain confidentiality in anything they tell you, as well as upholding and respecting privacy laws.

Learn from them, every individual has something or the other to offer, it may not always be something technical. Social skills, new tools, or websites they use. This quality in you will give them a good lesson on how you can learn from everyone.
