What are the best ways to measure financial performance in social entrepreneurship?

There is no such thing as financial performance in a social venture. The impact on lives either through higher education or inclusion by upskilling into employment. These are life-transforming acts and therefore cannot be measured by traditional measures like profit or revenue etc. Look at this example where an unemployed youth is trained in software programming by an NGO. This person gets employed thereby earning a good livelihood. A life is transformed forever, how do we calculate the gains of that training? It is beyond financial metrics, gains are in all dimensions of human growth. This act transformed not just that individual but the entire family. In India that means at least 4 humans are transformed for life.

I'm a bit confused as to why there should be a difference between social entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship. A social aspect should be included in entrepreneurship without having to highlight this aspect and the financial performance should be measured the same way for all businesses. Stakeholder expectations are another story and most likely the main driver behind social or anti-social business behavior.

Beyond Profit: Don't solely focus on profit maximization. Define objectives aligned with your social mission, like financial sustainability, reinvestment in impact, or affordability for target beneficiaries. Balance Goals: Consider trade-offs between financial and social impact. Aim for financial performance that enables, not hinders, your social mission.

One should clearly understand that Social Entrepreneurship is NOT a Non-profit activity. NGO depends on donations to survive. But Social Entrepreneurship has the potential to self-survive through revenue it makes. One individual can't give scholarships to needy students every year when he doesn't have an alternate source of income. Instead, the same person can give loans to students every year, since the money invested can be circulated. So, whatever we do for the society, define a way to get paid for the work you did. This can be done by clearly explaining the impact we create & empowerment they get through our service.

It's important to know exactly what you're working towards and having a clear outline of your financial goals at the outset. Enabling you to create a plan and roadmap based on achieving these goals

So many words to say, measure your business or you can’t manage it. You can’t just standardize the value rubric though, every business is different based on the direction the business wants to go and the value users derive. I’m sure the MBA classes say you can though, in which case just go copy whatever they claim is right and put that as my answer

This includes paying yourself and your team above minimum wage and eating more than ramen. It is fair and reasonable to charge a price that the market will bear, especially when you know that your organization can uses that margin to create greater impact.

It is possible that measurement will be quantitative as well as qualitative. In the business world the bottom line is profit while in social enterprises the bottom line to be measured is impact, meaning how much impact did every dollar that was invested, bring. Putting a lot of money in the wrong hands in a social enterprise, whereby one actually affects peoples lives, can be very dangerous.

SROI and IRIS are quite resource-intensive tools that require special knowledge. They are not suitable for everyone. There are much simpler ways to measure impact, e.g. Lean Impact Data from 60 Decibels and others.
